Don't give up so quick. I have operated VHF from there and it works
great. A field turnout south of the overlook about the crest of the hill
worked very well to the west. Setup right next to the car.
 On the south facing slope I got Madison
on 162.55 with an omni and on the North facing slope near the overlook
I got Duluth on 162.55. Both from the car.When I heard them say waves 
5 to 10 feet
from Duluth I not only knew that the surf was up but band conditions
were up also.
