I presume you kill the preamp power before shorting input to output? Do
you sequence that on both ends of the change over, so the preamp never
has a chance to fry itself by oscillating?

Remember if there's any other RF path (like the power wire) into the
preamp (and a mere 1000 pf feedthrough might not be that much filter
next to an antenna with 1.5 KW applied) the preamp survival is nearly
always better with power applied. Yet shorting output to input would
seem to make it oscillate at some frequency, possibly with destructive
amplitudes.
