Rick & Yippe - How about finding a small log periodic for an antenna. A little more gain would help you work out further in distance. QRP and dipoles can be tough on the operators and the other stations. A little gain goes a long(er) way. Or, maybe do fewer grids but take bigger antennas. Bigger antennas could get you into the Chicago area without having to drive! Rich N0HJZ
