Hi all...

For inquiring minds that want to know.....

Two papers on rain scatter info. I came across these as I was working =
very hard here at the office:) Watching the radar, etc.

Interesting to note that when I was discussing this very subject at =
CSVHF, with Bob - W0AUS, we were talking about FM, modes, SSB. We were =
chatting about how the FM was going when we worked the guys up in the =
cities and that SSB probably would have been non-readable.

I questioned that and indicated that I had worked both Gene - N0DQS and =
Bruce - W9FZ on SSB rain scatter. But Bob brought out the fact that the =
angle between the stations is the key. When the QSOs I had with the =
cities happened, we were at quite the angle. Angles to both Gene and =
Bruce (Gene was in WI - EN42 at the time, Bruce was in EN43) were fairly =
straight, thus more forward scatter. The doppler is much less there and =
allows the use of SSB. Of course your milage will vary. However this =
is a item discussed in one of the 2nd listed paper and concures with =
Bobs wisdom and experience!

One other note. According to 2nd paper listed, the european standard =
for RST reports is 59S - for CW. So, when on rain scatter, even when it =
sounds like Aurora, send an S! This sounds like a good idea to me and =
would like some feedback on it for our local use.

They really go to town over there in EU. According to what they say, =
the band can be full of signals on a good rain scatter opening..say =
10368.100 and up to 150. QRM city, and mostly random CQs for contacts. =
Very cool. They discourage the use of FM on .100 cause it makes too =
much QRM, FMers move up the band when its hot apparently.

Anyway, thought it was neat reading.

Anyone else have any good RS articles. Particullarly intrested in any =
hard data on 24 ghz rain and snow...
