Getting some good suggestions, thanks all !   Here is one interesting 
solution .... its a DC/DC converter that stacks on top of the battery voltage so that 
it doesnt have to generate all the current load, thus it tends to be small.  
For example if the battery voltage is 11.0 vdc it generates 2.5 volts to 
provide 13.5 vdc .... two models; one for 23 amps one for 30 amps.   Here is the
