There is a very nice single, five-legged IC available that may do the job, 
although I think it's rated at up to 5A not 6 or 7.  It is an LM2577T and 
comes in a TO220-5 package.  It needs only a small handful of external 
components to do its job, an inductor, couple of resistors and capacitors.

Perhaps there is a variant of it available that will source more current.

Oh, it will step up or down as necessary to maintain regulation.  It does 
generate a little hash at 52kHz, but it shouldn't be too tough to filter 
out if it is a problem.
