I've found flux residue to be sensitive indicators (though uncalibrated)
of humidity. Had some expensive modems at a client's that would fail
when they left the weather office windows open overnight in June (in
Iowa) and the RH would get to 100%. Send them back to the factory for
$250 service fee and they'd change some parts but the next spring they'd
fail again. Once I noticed the flux on the CMOS logic boards and cleaned
it off with flux cleaner (RS used to sell a decent spray can of it, I
don't know if they still do) those modems didn't fail again. I suspect
flux cleaners are more than just alcohol and are more effective than
plain alcohol on some fluxes. Flux cleaners I've found to be effective
on cleaning rosin from circular saw blades too.
