Glen, I have used the FT-100 for 3 years or so as an IF rig on 902 up thru
10 gigs and fair success. The original FT-100 I used had the SWR icon
grounding mod done to it and seemed to have no problems then I switched to
an early FT-100d ( no they don't have the mods done to them already) and
began to take destroy the 5.7 and 10 gig transverters, took a while to
figure out that it was the IF rig ( I think) but in putting the 100D on the
bench it did do some strange stuff including the spike on key up you
referred to. This I could actually see on the Bird. It also did this on 432
and the swr icon would indicate hi swr ( into a dummy load?) and I while on
432 you could hear it on 2 meters ( listening on different rig). I did the
internal grounding mod to the 100D and the problem went away. Have done a
bunch of bench testing and in the mobile and no spikes and no problem with
the swr icon into a good load. The problem seems to have gone away.
