Jon and group,

While doing some recent web research this area, I discovered "PowerStream"
(www.powerstream.com) and have myself ordered (but not yet received) one of
their PST-DU700 units, 10-14 Volt In to 'steady' 13.8 Volt out devices (50
Amp Peak output, 20 Amp 'continuous').

PowerStream also features "12 V In" to various output voltages (including 24
V), at lower wattages designed for powering laptops in autos...the ones
listed for Apple Laptops are rated 48 - 60W (24 Volts out, 2 - 2.5 Amps).
Try http://www.powerstream.com/adc.htm and scroll down to Apple (there's
also a Compaq unit or two that specified 24 Volts). The ones available for
ordering through the web are $85 each.

These MAY produce/radiate some RF hash (actually I'd suggest it's very
likely that they do given that they would be utilizing some form of
switching power supply) so there may be some incompatibility issues with
weak signal work (or some additional work to use them in this application).

I have not received the unit I ordered yet so I don't really consider myself
a customer, let alone a 'satisfied' customer. Your mileage may vary.
Batteries definitely NOT included (but PowerStream sells them as well ;-).

73,
JK (K9, that is, and sometimes 'slash arrrgh')
