I found a small windoze program on the net today from Germany named
radiodist.exe. It is a self-contained win32 binary (doesn't need to be
extracted/setup/mangled/etc) that is a very nice little bearing and
distance calculator for Maidenhead grids. I know there's a lot of them
out there, however, this one is optimised for mobile/portable UHF/SHF
stuff in that it supports the extended 8-digit grid locators.
This improves the resolution of calculations by a factor of ten which, as
we al know, is very useful on the higher microwave bands.
What's more, it will happily directly accept a serial NMEA feed from your
handy-dandy portable or mobile GPS receiver for calculation of your own
location. This makes finding the DX a snap simply entering in the remote
locator in either 6 or 8 digit Maidenhead notation. If you wish you can
also enter the location in standard spherical notation
(degrees/minutes/seconds).
When using it in a car it even has has a really cool "relative" bearing
mode where it pokes a spoke out of the respective window of your vehicle.
Brilliant!
And, of course, it's totally free.
If you'd like to play with it, I have put a copy of it up on my ftp
server. The url is:-
