Ok CJ, thanks for the info. No it didn't sound too dumb, that was a good layman's terms explanation. I just added UHF to the shack this year so I really don't have much experience in what there is to deal with as far as signals from other commercial uses.
The NB will not remove this noise, also at its lowest signal strength it is about S9+40, at its peak about every 7-10 seconds its S9+60 and im sure if my S-Meter went higher than +60 over it would still be pegged. If I turn on the ATT (and yes the preamp is off in these examples) then I can reduce it below full scale at least during the weaker period of the signal.
So I'm starting to think that it isn't radar, at least it doesn't sound like you described. I tried the usual noise abatement troubleshooting, I turned off the power at the breaker panel to everything but the shack and it was still there, so then I shut off everything in the shack and flipped that breaker off too and ran the radio off a battery for a while, no change. So it is something other than my household, does anyone have any ideas as to what it may be? It sounds like an unmodulated carrier with a burst of static every 7-10 seconds, when the burst of static is heard the signal strength increases, and it is like a car going past, that is it gets stronger and louder on approach then weakens and gets quiet as it moves away. Understand what I'm trying to explain? I will get the radio hooked up to the sound card tonight and make some recordings of it, I will let you know when I get the recordings available on my web site, or I can email them or something.
