I also practiced for passing the 20 WPM extra by sending highway
signs before actually passing them.     Being near-sighted made that even more 
challenging.   I actually used a keyer and paddle in the car.

Having said that,  I disagree with the idea that practicing with the key
isn't that important.   I know many hams who passed the code
test but were affraid to get on the air because they had never practiced
sending.     I know a young man who easily passed his 13 wpm general
but was uncopyable when on the air.   I strongly suggest practice sending
and receiving and finding a code buddy to work with.   If you
are within working distance on two meters of winona.   I will work with
you.
