Hi Mike, good question. Here is how I have worked my 26 states this year:
Key
Au = Aurora
T = Tropo
MS = Meteor scatter
E = Sporadic E
Alabama = MS
Colorado = MS
Illinois = T
Indiana = T
Iowa = T
Kansas = T
Kentucky = Au
Michigan = T
Minnesota = T
Missouri = T
Nebraska = T
New Jersey = MS
New Mexico = E
New York = T
North Carolina = T
North Dakota = T
Ohio = T
Oklahoma = T
Pennsylvania = MS
South Carolina = MS
South Dakota = T
Texas = MS
Vermont = MS
West Virginia = T
Wisconsin = Au
Wyoming = Au
I think others have used HSMS and EME to add to their totals. Between just
tropo and aurora, I think that you can work 15 states fairly easy (with 100
watts, a horizontal yagi, and CW). The new digital mode that Chris talked
about at Au'02 looks very powerful towards working states without extensive
CW expertise .... the "older" HSCW systems still required CW knowledge, but
the new mode (JT144 ??) does not.
