Hi all.

On Saturday June 15th eight of us traveled to
the water tower hill in Monticello to try to work the
five grids needed for VUCC on 10 GHz. The group included
Bob, W0AUS, Gary W0GHZ, Lenny, K0SHF, Bruce, W9FZ,
Mel, KC0P, Doug, N0NAS, Donn, WA2VOI, and Gary, WB0LJC.
Jon, K0FQA, traveled north to EN26 and EN36 to provide those
grids.

Jon, K0FQA, started near Lathrop in EN26. While the rest of us
were located on the north side of the water tower hill in Monticello.
Great views in many directions. We spent sometime trying
unsuccessfully to work Jon. Jon would transmit while we listened,
tuned and changed the directions of our antennas. We also tried
sending to Jon but that didn't work either. Jon then traveled to
a number of other sites. One was the site near Onamia. A path
that Jon and Gary had worked earlier this spring. We spent
more time both listening for and transmitting to Jon but with
no success. We decided to call it a day and work the other
four easier grids.

Before we moved we worked Donn, WA2VOI, for grid EN35.

Gary, W0GHZ, and Bob, W0AUS, traveled to the EN34, EN24, EN25
grid corner near Dog Lake. The rest of us moved to the other
side of the hill. Signals from 34 and 25 were good once we had
the antennas aligned. Signals from 24 were quite weak,
a surprise because Gary was running 1W and the location was
only a short distance from the others. Everyone worked Gary, giving
us four of the five grids needed for VUCC. Jon arrived in time to check
his equipment with Gary while he was in EN24. We had hoped the
reason that we couldn't work Jon was that he was having equipment
problems. Unfortunately that wasn't the case.

Typical equipment is an 18" offset dish, with transmit power ranging
from 10 mW up to 2W. Almost everyone is using a Down East
transverter.

A fun afternoon even if we couldn't finish the VUCC. Thanks to Jon,
Gary and Bob for traveling to the grid corners.

73, Gary WB0LJC
