The Rhombic at a CSVHF conference did 17.1 dBd. The original article
about it claimed 27 dBd. I did a careful analysis (published in the last
CSVHF Conference Proceedings from Cedar Rapids) and found that it had
monstrous lobes that accounted for much of that 10 dB difference mostly
of the looking at the ground to make a horrible G/T for the antenna.
Then there's that power contribution of the termination and the original
rhombic's being tested with ground reflection, not in free space as a
UHF antenna is generally used (at least far from earth) and tested at
CSVHF conference.

Cheap, sure. Easy, maybe. Good, nope. You can get lots more gain with a
bit more construction complexity with good yagis in the same volume, and
the yagis have clean patterns.

A preliminary version of my rhombic article (on the Laport Rhombic) was
also posted to the W6YX VHF reflector that year.
