Many changes were made to the NLRS web site over the weekend.
One major change that should be "transparent" to all users, namely
that the whole site has been moved to a new server. My U of MN server
has a limited amount of space available to me, and we would have
exceeded it with the last set of updates. The old address will now
automagically take you to the new address, but if you want to update
your bookmarks, the new address is:
http://nlrs.dropboxone.net/index.htm
At this point, if you have web pages pointing to the old home page,
I wouldn't necessarily bother to change them right now, because we
are hoping to get our own domain name connected to the new server.
More on that as it develops.
Thanks to Kevin Uhlir, N0BEL, we now have a new home for the NLRS web
pages, with all the disk space we are likely to ever want, on a
commercial machine that gets plenty of attention including regular
backups, proper power conditioning and emergency power backup, etc.
Kevin uses one of these machines for his software business, and since
it has lots of excess capacity, he is making it available to us at
no charge. A hearty thank-you goes out to him for this generous
gesture.
Now that the new server is available, I was finally able to finish
most of the updates that have been pending for the last month or so.
There are some changes to the home page, mainly in the Contesting
area, thanks to an inspiration I got from Jon (W0ZQ) in his recent
posting about the January 2002 VHF Sweepstakes Results. Check it
out, I think you will find it interesting. (Some of the files may
be inaccessible to non-members of the ARRL, unfortunately.)
Most of the remaining changes are to the Aurora 2002 pages. All of
the photos I received are now linked into the appropriate pages, and
several of the afternoon session pages have additional links to the
handout or slide materials used during the presentations.
Any of the presenters who did not send me copies of their materials
are still welcome to do so, and I will get them onto the web pages
for all to see and use. As I discovered with Barry (VE4MA)'s
PowerPoint presentation, even a huge *.ppt file can be painlessly
converted into a series of web pages that are each relatively small
(good for viewing over a slow Internet connection), so don't let that
hold you back. Word documents, graphics files, text files, Excel
spreadsheet files, whatever you have, I will be happy to take it in
and work with it.
Many thanks go out to the photographers who shared their many pictures
with us for the Aurora 2002 web pages, including:
Lenny Klosinski, K0SHF
Mike Bagstad, KB0OZN
Jeff Cole, N9PPE
Bud Patten, W0LCP
(Yeah, a number of them came from me, too, but it doesn't quite
seem right for me to say thank you to me from me...)
As always, more to come!
