Bryan -

Run with a station that is about 600-800 miles from you.  That is an 
excellent distance for good burns on meteor scatter.  FInd someone in Denver, 
Little Rock, Cleveland, Toronto, etc.  You'll get good burns and the distance 
is right to practice using meteor scatter.  Once you get the hang of it, 
extend the distance.
