I built two of the DEM 10GHz kits. Soldering the pipe cap filters was the
easy part. I just put it on a hotplate and warmed the pallet and board to
300 F with a ring of solder in each hole under the pipecap. After everything
was up to temperature I just hit each cap with a soldering iron for a few
seconds and the eutectic solder melted almost immediately. An oven with an
accurate thermometer and a cookie sheet would've worked too. The harder part
was peaking all the filters and the large number of SMT components. For the
cost it wasn't worth building them myself but it was worth it for getting a
feel for what does and doesn't work at 10GHz. The only gripe I have is that
the 3/4" pipe caps make it hard to ovenize the crystal and put an SMA on the
lo board for a quick disconnect. Its cramped in the standard enclosure.
