[NJARC] Practical Antenna Systems

Do any of you know what type of transformer was used in the R-42 speaker that was used with the SX-42?  And yes, higher is better for FM.  Of course I now have the SX-42 on it's way to working again, and I'm too far north now to hear Armstrong Tower when you run the special event.  I'm just starting the alignment process.

Al, ever try an SX-42 on FM?  Seemed OK to me and pretty good audio with p-p 6V6s!Jim I wonder why people argue over the 10% of their differences and ignore the 90% they agree on?

 FM broadcast is a considerably different environment than AM.  The wavelength is 100 time smaller, and the background noise is very low.  One of the primary bugaboos is multi-path reception.  If you antenna doesn't have a reasonably clear shot to the transmitter, you pick up multiple reflections off various objects.  (including passing aircraft.)  Because the arrival times vary, the signals cancel out, causing deep fades and noise.  Problem is similar to "ghosts" on analog TV.
 
 The four-element Yagi you linked to is probably as good as it gets.  It may drive you to include a rotator if you listen to stations from different directions.
 
 Omnidirectional antennas can work pretty well if you get them up high, and in the clear:  AMAZON AGAIN
 I have a similar antique  "turnstyle" in my attic, here in Jersey City, that works much better than rabbit ears or twin-lead dipoles located at the radio.
 
 One of my long-term frustrations is that I've never encountered a tube-type FM radio that was any damn good compared to cheap 21st-Century sets.  That includes the famous Marantz 10B, built-in oscilloscope and all.
