Steve is well-known and easy to find...he is located in the middle of the second pavilion, on the outside aisle opposite the entrance. He usually sells early battery stuff and sets up close to member Pete Grave. The item is a DeForest Interpanel so only criteria is length. I can pick up the item at the museum or at our meeting. First the author states that the wireless technology was considered ?an inefficient means of emergency communication? - I wonder what the more efficient alternatives were. The idea that hams interfered with the sos messages is confused with some after the fact messages that all passengers were safe. Two different issues. I wouldn?t doubt the erroneous information but would highly doubt those messages were only from amateurs and just as likely could have been from commercial stations. Just as with our 911 and other modern day disasters there is always mid information after the fact. And the allegation that hams may have interfered with sos message is absurd. The range of ham transmitters at the time were very limited and any help would have only been practical from ships very close to titanic and easily in receiving range IF they had been monitoring - and we know most were not. Finally he says as a result the number of hams drastically was reduced. And that did happen but because of ww1 and not the titanic. And then Marconi Corp lobbied for protection of the amateur service because it was essential to building a base of experienced technicians and operators. This author is an ass. I studied the radio aspects of the disaster pretty thoroughly back in 2012 for a centennial presentation at InfoAge. Marine radio range in those days was only a couple hundred miles. The whole thing was handled by the ships in the area, and the Marconi station at Cape Race, Newfoundland.? The are extensive records from various logs of virtually all the comm;s.? No sign of ham interference. I can't really say what happen ashore, but it wouldn't have made any difference. Read about the heros who handled the sinking and rescue of the passengers. Attached Thomas Appleby was able to copy the relayed messages all the way in Philadelphia without (and he never mentioned) amateur radio interference. Commercial and Navy operators commented around that time about hams interfering, but mostly they considered hams "Deplorables", not equal to themselves. (Many hams were better operators than the so-called commercial/Navy operators.) And in 1912 there were not that many hams on the air, and most of them had small signals which only went short distances, typically less than one mile. 73, John Dilks, K2TQN Web Site - www.k2tqn.com __ Retired - Now writing for Electric Radio Magazine _____ Former Editor Vintage Radio Column, QST Magazine 2000-2014 ________ Having fun smelling hot rosin and solder again > On May 3, 2018 at 6:12 PM Aaron Hunter wrote: > > > Just remember > Reply = Poster > Reply All = Everyone > > _________________________________________________________ > An interesting article from Arcadia Publishing regarding interference > and false information from radio amateurs. > > https://www.arcadiapublishing.com/Navigation/Community/Arcadia-and-THP-Blog/April-2018/How-Amateur-Radio-Sunk-the-Titanic?sc_src=email_115918&sc_lid=13703561&sc_uid=xJjN3XTnd4&sc_llid=10439&sc_eh=ed2471a81c5bf0461&utm_source=arcadiapublishing&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Blog_20180503 https://www.arcadiapublishing.com/Navigation/Community/Arcadia-and-THP-Blog/April-2018/How-Amateur-Radio-Sunk-the-Titanic?sc_src=email_115918&sc_lid=13703561&sc_uid=xJjN3XTnd4&sc_llid=10439&sc_eh=ed2471a81c5bf0461&utm_source=arcadiapublishing&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Blog_20180503 > > Aaron Hunter > ____________________________________________________________ > -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Message-ID: <16397d96609-c95-5ee3@webjas-vaa131.srv.aolmail.net> >From this weeks ARRL Newsletter. Joe Devonshire In Brief... Princess Elettra Marconi has been invited to take part in a May 31 ham radio contact with Newfoundland during a visit to Cape Cod National Seashore. The contact will be between KM1CC on the Cape and VO1AA at the Society of Newfoundland Radio Amateurs (SONRA) club in St. John's, Newfoundland. Chris Hillier, VO1IDX, will serve as net control, KM1CC Trustee Barbara Dougan, N1NS, told ARRL. "Someone from KM1CC will stay on the air with VO1AA, should the Princess need to depart, then after, KM1CC can take calls from others [wanting] to contact KM1CC in grid FN51." The plan is to use 14.224 MHz SSB on or around 1645 - 1700 UTC. It was at St. John's in 1901 that Guglielmo Marconi, using a kite-supported antenna, received the letter "S" from his station in Poldhu, Cornwall. -- Thanks to KM1CC Trustee Barbara Dougan, N1NS -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Beyond this minor error, the Sensitive or Morris Relay seems to require somewhere around 40 to 60 mA to operate reliably but the 01A has a typical plate current of only 3 mA! ?The 01A would be struggling in this circuit. HB-3 data shows no maximum 01A ratings but shows curves out to about 10 mA with 158 volts on the plate and -5 volts on the grid. ?With 100 volts on the plate and zero grid volts, plate current should be about 8 mA give or take. ?With a hard +9 volts on the grid as per the schematic, we are in unknown territory. ?I have no idea how reliable an 01A is under these conditions. ?Perhaps this explains the resistor problems noted in the text? Then there is the final issue of applying 6 volts to a 5 volt rated filament. Even the 6J5 would have difficulty in this circuit. ?Maximum plate current rating is 20 mA; typical plate current is 10 mA at 100 volts plate. ?But to be fair, there are curves in HB-3 that show 40+ mA of plate current with +9 volts on the grid. ?So there is hope in using the 6J5 in this circuit using the Morris Relay.Regards,Jim From: Alex Magoun To: njarc at mailman.qth.net Sent: Tuesday, May 29, 2018 3:47 PM Subject: [NJARC] Richard Brewster rebuilds the Eccles-Jordan flip-flop Now online at IEEE Spectrum:?https://spectrum.ieee.org/geek-life/hands-on/recreating-the-first-flipflop. I think I have a Morse relay in the collection but it is missing the return spring IIRC. ?I could check the pull in current of the relay if I can find a suitable spring but I think that there is enough evidence available on the 'net that the current required is at least twice of that supplied by the 6SN7 and perhaps five times what an 01A could provide.
