[NJARC] Short Wave Listening

 If you were sending a QSL request to a communist country, remember how you had to address it just right? China, Communist China or Mainland China would bounce back. It had to be Peoples' Republic of China. 
Don't kit yourself. Every one of us who sent away for these QSL cards has an FBI dossier. One of these days, I may make an FOIA request and see what they have on this.

 I got a chuckle out of your FBI story.  Back in the same era, some of my friends and I discovered that you could send a note to the major space-program suppliers, and get nice pictures of their products.  I remember one really vice piece on the X-15 rocket plane.  One of our guys got carried away.  He had a short form letter set up as a post-card-size rubber stamp, and mailed a bunch of them.  Sure enough, the FBI came around to see what was going on.

 Radio Havana Cuba has been a mainstay for years and easy to hear on 6 mhz every night till midnight.  Arnie Coro CO2KK does a short 10 minute too on ham radio topics. And still good old fashioned communist propaganda and Anti American commentary bring back memories of Radio Moscow.  
  Speaking of which when I was 15 or so I was visited by the FBI asking why I was writing so many letters to communist counties - Hungary, East Germany, Russia, Czechoslavkia,  etc.  they even had reply letters to me which they opened.    
  My father was not pleased with that. He was pissed at me and not the Feds.  But he was really pissed later on when FCC knocked on our door at 11PM when I was bootlegging CB.

 SWL has been an important influence in my life all the way back to about 1958 when I had the first opportunity to play with my Uncle Donald's Hallicrafters S-20R.

 I recent years I've been bemoaning the demise of short-wave broadcasting, but recently I resolved to stop complaining and do some listening.

 It's not like the old days, when you could tune down the band with a Knight Kit Ocean Hopper, and easily hear most of the world, beaming in your direction in English.  A quick listen can make you thing that there nothing left but religious broadcasters.

 There's still SWL'ing to be done here in the 21st Century.  Digital receivers are really helpful to get to the desired freq, and memories are quite helpful.  And, there are a lot of helpful resources on the Web.

 Here are some suggestions.  I'm listening to former pirate radio operator, Alan Wiener, who went ligit and operates WBCQ (7490) as I type.

 •WWCR - 9350 –Rock 23:30Z –Brokered time to foreign broadcasters •WRMI – 9395 –Rock 23:30Z •WTWW – 5085 (evenings) –Watch for Ham Radio related programs. •WBCQ – 7490 (evenings) –Rock music and other secular stuff. – Especially Weekends •Radio New Zealand Int. – 13,840 –20:51 - 23:58Z (except Saturday?) •CFRX 6070 Toronto –SW outlet of CFRB - News Talk 1010 –1 KW 24/7 •R. Romania Int.  9370 –00:00-00:57Z & 03:00-03:57Z
