Folks,
Allow me to weigh in on this topic as a charter member of the Radio
Technology Museum staff. The staff is made up of those who show up and
pitch in. There are a lot of ways one can contribute: General
maintenance, designing and constructing displays, restoring specific
equipment, and serving as a docent. The latter is perhaps the most
needed and time critical.
InfoAge is open to the public almost every Wednesday, Saturday, and
Sunday from 1-5 PM. We've managed to man the Museum virtually every
scheduled day for almost 10 years. However, some times it's a problem,
and we'd like to have a pool of docents big enough that one would only
have to serve maybe once a month or so.
Being a docent is fun, and does not require a lot of specific
knowledge. You are simply serving as host for the visitors. You can
show them the things that you like and understand. We all come at the
radio hobby from different directions. There is a formal docent's
handbook, but you can pick up a/*LOT */from just reading the signage.
Yes, the museum staff may appear to be something of a clique, but it's a
worthwhile and rewarding one. John is absolutely correct, Wednesday is
work day at the RTM, as well as a day we're open to the public. If you
want to better understand this institution, show up about 11AM on any
Wednesday. You can come to lunch with the gang, and we'll see if we can
put you to work.
Don't be shy,
Al
