Hi Jim,
There's just about a group for everything these days. Yahoo was the go to site for many, but over the last year or so, it's become an advertising nightmare among other issues. Heathkit, Drake, Kenwood, etc.,, are still there.
Recently, Groups.io has become the group that gets away from the advertising and spam issues. Back in the February / March timeframe, the moderator of the Hallicrafters group migrated the Yahoo Hallicrafters group to Groups.io. Bill Gerhold K2WH is the moderator. From my understanding, it is free up to a certain amount of memory used and rather minimal after that. I believe he's pretty local to InfoAge, so he might be a good one to have to do a talk some time. Like you, I'm a Webcast watcher now.

Regards,
Joe

Sound interesting. Seems pretty specialized to have a hallicafters only discussion group.
How does one find a list of the various groups on .io?
Jim

Hi Jim,
There's a Hallicrafters group I joined that's now on Groups.io. If you can't get any help, it might be worth the effort to joint up with them.

Have had this radio for more years then I care to admit too. OK, I'll fess up, its been in the collection for at least 30 years. It predates Ruth.
Previous owner cut the battery section off (about 6 inches of metal work) and shortened the case so that it is now almost a cube. Repair information from John Rider's manuals is available on the web but it is missing page 16-20 which is the complete schematic!
The partial schematic that is the first page of the pdf is a detail of the wiring of the band switch in each of the 4 bands. Luckily I have the Rider series and printed a pdf copy of that page. BTW, the Rider information is not user friendly., no pin numbers for tubes and no component values are on the schematic.
Previous owner started a repair by replacing about a third of the coupling and bypass caps. He also added a BNC connector in place of the external four pin antenna connector. My usual technique is to replace all caps in consumer radios because of the low quality of components. I started a wholesale cap replacement and checked and replaced about a dozen resistors as I worked my way from the front end to the speaker.
As I got to the detector / first audio stage, I noticed that there appears to be a major disagreement between the radio as found and the schematic. After a more thorough check, it now appears that the previous owner has miswired the set in several places while doing his repairs.
A paper note found in the set from 1975 mentions that the radio played and then quit but with the extent of the miswiring, I doubt that it ever worked properly after surgery. Lots of mischief in the detector / first audio and BFO stages. Perhaps the note was for the benefit of a quick sale?
So my question is this: is the schematic correct for the whole production run or was there a change made by hallicrafters sometime during production? I don't mind undoing the damage but I am not sure if I have the final configuration schematic. Any shared experience working on this radio would be greatly appreciated!
So tomorrow I'll start going through the radio again and compare it to the schematic: component by component. What I thought would only take a day or so is turning into an adventure.
