Message-ID: Hi all, Do any of you have an empty spool for a Webster Chicago wire recorder? I've obtained a player earlier this year, and the one I received has a wire already spooled on the take-up reel, and no empty source spool to put it back on. I have several reels with wire on it that came with it, but no empty reels. I know how fragile these wires can be, so I figured one of you out there somewhere has one that is hopelessly tangled, or has broken so many times you got fed up with it and threw the wire away? I'm trying to avoid scrapping a good recording for an empty reel. If anybody has one they can spare, let me know. Yahoo was the go to site for many, but over the last year or so, it's become an advertising nightmare among other issues. Heathkit, Drake, Kenwood, etc.,, are still there. Recently, Groups.io has become the group that gets away from the advertising and spam issues. Back in the February / March timeframe, the moderator of the Hallicrafters group migrated the Yahoo Hallicrafters group to Groups.io. Bill Gerhold K2WH is the moderator. From my understanding, it is free up to a certain amount of memory used and rather minimal after that. I believe he's pretty local to InfoAge, so he might be a good one to have to do a talk some time. Like you, I'm a Webcast watcher now. The Columbia Broadcasting System announced, some time ago, its plan to have Frank E. Nicholson, aboard the dirigible, send daily accounts of progress and of life on board; these to be rebroadcast through stations of the Columbia network. It is a part of this plan, to rebroadcast Mr. Nicholson's voice just as soon as the Gral Zeppelin is pear enough to permit voice reception on short waves. In (July, 1929) RADIO NEWS Mr. Curtis Glenn described quite vividly what he listened to in the short span of twentyfour hours. Yet, even so, the surface has just been scratched. Given a good, efficient receiver, the possibilities of listening to far-off signals, signals from the . ends of the earth-yes, signals that virtually travel 'round the earth-are boundless. This was acquired from the John Kelly (SK) collection. There is an 12 page document fro the 1930 Short Wave Manual that goes with it. Delivery is available at the NJARC swap next week. Pay Pal is OK Asking $650.00 73, John Dilks, K2TQN Web Site - www.k2tqn.com Having fun smelling hot rosin and solder again. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Joe Devonshire >From this weeks ARRL Newsletter.... RadioShack "Express Stores" to Open in HobbyTown USA Locations According to a July 13 article in the New York Post, RadioShack is planning to open "express stores" within HobbyTown USA locations. The nearly century-old, twice-bankrupt retailer has signed a deal with HobbyTown USA to put a mini RadioShack outlet in some 50 HobbyTown USA stores across the country that would sell items that might appeal to radio amateurs and experimenters. Those locations will be identified with RadioShack signage. HobbyTown markets remote-controlled cars and boats as well as drones and other hobby-related merchandise. RadioShack shuttered all of its company-owned retail outlets. Its last unsuccessful effort to bail itself out of debt involved a deal with cellular provider Sprint. HobbyTown USA has 140 retail outlets, and, according to the Postarticle, RadioShack eventually could carve out a presence -- on the order of 500 square feet -- in all of them. Stores in HobbyTown USA's headquarters town of Lincoln, Nebraska, as well as in Parker, Colorado, and Mooresville, North Carolina, will be among the first to host RadioShack express concessions. "HobbyTown is purchasing the RadioShack merchandise and offering it to its hobbyist customers who need the tools, wires, and other accessories that RadioShack makes," the Post article said. The article quoted Steve Moroneso, chief executive of General Wireless Operations Inc. -- an affiliate of hedge fund Standard General, which acquired RadioShack in 2015 -- as saying that RadioShack's strategy now is not to own brick-and-mortar stores. RadioShack came out of bankruptcy in January with 400 dealers, an online retail presence, and a distribution center. General Wireless acquired the 1,743 retail outlets that survived RadioShack's 2015 bankruptcy. Moroneso also told the Post that there is "plenty of interest from dealers who want to open a full-line Radio Shack." Stores in HobbyTown USA's headquarters town of Lincoln, Nebraska, as well as in Parker, Colorado, and Mooresville, North Carolina, will be among the first to host RadioShack express concessions. > Moroneso also told the Post that there is "plenty of interest from dealers who want to open a full-line Radio Shack." They are wound with a lot of very fine wire, say #40 (0.00314"), and the years have not been kind to them. ?? Rewinding one of these things is a complete freak show.? You'd really have to want to do it, or have a lot of money to pay someone to do the job. I'll try to address this without getting too geeky. I measured a random 1920's transformer:?? Primary resistance = 550 Ohms. ( that would be about 500 feet of # 40 wire.)? Secondary resistance = 1800 ohms.? Turns radio = 1:3 ( Measured by applying 1 volt p-p at 1 KHz to the primary, and observing 3 volts p-p on the open secondary with a 'scope.)? Note that, at least in this case, the P:S resistance ratio is consistent with the turns ratio. *The important characteristics of a transformer are:* *Turns ratio:*? E.g., 1:3? That means that 1 volt in will be /*transformed*/ to 3 volts out. The impedance ration is the square of the turns ratio, e.g., 1:9. So it will /*transform*/ a 10K ohm source into a 90K ohm output impedance. *Primary inductance:*? E.g., 7.2 Henry. This establishes the low-frequency response of the transformer.? In this case, 7.2 H at 200 Hz = 9048 ohms.? That's a reasonable plate load for an '01A tube. Inductance calculator; http://www.66pacific.com/calculators/inductive-reactance-calculator.aspx *More below:* On 7/20/2018 12:49 PM, Al Schapira wrote: > > ... concerning interstage audio transformers in TRF sets. > > Say you have a UX-200 detector stage transformer coupled to the > following UX-201A stage. > Typically, the transformer ratio is 1:3 or 1:4 (primary:secondary) for > an impedance ratio step up of 9 or 16 to one. > > Now, the plate resistance spec for the UX-200 is 30k and the UX-201A > grid is otherwise open and the 201 is usually biased at -4.5 volts. So > 1) How critical is the turns ratio? *Not really critical.*? The turns ratio represents additional free gain.? An '01A has an amplification factor of 8. I.e., a 1-volt input produces an 8-volt output, the the transformer multiples this by three. ? A voltage gain of 3 is +9.5 dB, significant, but it's not a big deal.? If? the gain is only 2, that's +6 dB, or if it 4 the gain would be 12 dB.? You're unlikely to notice these differences by ear.? Transformers of this sort, with turns rations higher than 1:4 - 1:5 are difficult (expensive) to build. > 2) How critical are DC resistances in the primary and in the secondary? *Again, not very*.? I be suspicious of a transformer that had a primary resistance significantly less than 500 ohms.? It likely would not have enough primary inductance to support acceptable low-frequency response. > 3) What are typical values for the DC resistances in the primary and > secondary windings? Primary: on the order of 500 ohms.? Secondary:? on the order of of 2000 ohms. > > You guessed it. I have three TRF sets with open transformers. Anyone > have any to spare? > c Because the gain provided by a single transformer is not that great, you can get away with bypassing a dead XFMR with a capacitor and a resistor(s) across the open winding(s).? Not elegant, but the set will play. The first suspect would be the volume control. If so, it is very common to have one terminal of the volume control connected to circuit ground. If the ground connection is broken the volume will be maxed out. So I would check the 3 pot terminals of the volume control for resistance to ground. One of the terminals should be at or near ground potential. With a schematic I could be more specific. I could pick up at our museum on Sunday, or directly from you if you're anywhere near Parsippany, or by mail. Any reasonable price. The portrait of a young Marconi probably done around 1916 was on display in the lobby of the hotel at InfoAge but has been missing for a while. The portrait probably had never been cleaned and somewhere along the line had sustained a small hole in the canvas. Through the diligent efforts of the InfoAge trustees, funding was obtained from a local art group to pay for a professional cleaning and restoration. That was accomplished and the "new" Marconi portrait was unveiled at the recent Wall Of Honor ceremony last Saturday evening. If you get a chance, stop by and take a look at the results, a job well done and thanks to the trustees for getting it done.
