We will do a repeat of the two activities that we did last year. We expect about 80 High School kids who are interested in STEM. Here is the link to the handout material, as produced by Al Klase, for the 2-hour event: http://rtm.ar88.net/resources/miniA/default.html If you are one of the volunteers who will be helping us, take a look at this and come to the museum on Wednesday around an hour ahead of time. We could still use a few more people to help out. It is easy, fun, and the kids are great. Just let Al or me know and show up. Thanks Jules A. UNESCO?s Executive Board recommended to the General Conference the proclamation of World Radio Day, on the basis of a feasibility study undertaken by UNESCO, further to a proposal from Spain. Radio is the mass media reaching the widest audience in the world. It is also recognized as a powerful communication tool and a low cost medium. Radio is specifically suited to reach remote communities and vulnerable people: the illiterate, the disabled, women, youth and the poor, while offering a platform to intervene in the public debate, irrespective of people?s educational level. Furthermore, radio has a strong and specific role in emergency communication and disaster relief. There is also a changing face to radio services which, in the present times of media convergence, are taking up new technological forms, such as broadband, mobiles and tablets. However, it is said that up to a billion people still do not have access to radio today. A wide consultation process started in June 2011, carried out by UNESCO. It included all stakeholders, i.e. broadcasting associations; public, state, private, community and international broadcasters; UN agencies; funds and programmes; topic-related NGOs; academia; foundations and bilateral development agencies; as well as UNESCO Permanent Delegations and National Commissions. Among the answers, 91% were in favour of the project. The leader of the project, the Academia Espa?ola de la Radio, received over 46 letters of support from diverse stakeholders, including the Arab States Broadcasting Union (ASBU), the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU), the African Union of Broadcasting (AUB), Bangladesh NGOs Network for Radio and Communication (BNNRC), the Caribbean Broadcasting Union (CBU), the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), the International Association of Broadcasting (IAB), the North American Broadcasters Association (NABA), the Organizaci?n de Telecomunicaciones Ibeoramericanas (OTI), BBC, URTI, Vatican Radio, etc. The date of 13 February, the day the United Nations radio was established in 1946, was proposed by the Director-General of UNESCO. The objectives of the Day will be to raise greater awareness among the public and the media of the importance of radio; to encourage decision makers to establish and provide access to information through radio; as well as to enhance networking and international cooperation among broadcasters. The consulted stakeholders also proposed ideas for the programme of celebration: extensive use of social media, annual themes, a dedicated website enabling virtual participation, special radio programmes, radio programmes exchange, a festival involving key partners, and so forth. On 14 January 2013, the United Nations General Assembly formally endorsed UNESCO?s proclamation of World Radio Day. During its 67th Session, the UN General Assembly endorsed the resolution adopted during the 36th session of the UNESCO General Conference, proclaiming 13 February, the day United Nations Radio was established in 1946, as World Radio Day. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I've had several custom made can caps made by Tom and his staff. For some he can use his references to get the exact match for what you need, or you can send him the dimensions, and values along with the appropriate symbols for the can you need. Suggestion, bump up the working voltages from what the original had. Tom's suggested that to me more than once. Just make sure you tell him if you need it insulated from the chassis. Tom's canned caps will really dress up your vintage radio chassis and give you further reason to clean it up. At the end of 2016 he moved his operation to a larger facility and is able to move more pieces now. They don't take phone calls, but will respond to e-mails. I recently picked up a Packard Bell RPC-31 console stereo at an estate sale. It?s in decent shape and it works. I have always wanted one of these things and I really want to get it in good working shape so it will last me a long time. I have been told that I should get the amp recapped/serviced. Also, one speaker has very weak sound, so I would want that checked too. Where can I go for a job like this? Any help is appreciated. Thank you! I need to make up some of the old-fashioned embossed Dymo labels. I'm sure you know what I mean, the style that comes on the plastic tape that you spin the wheel around, find your letter, and squeeze the printer to squish the letter into the plastic tape. There are low-quality modern day embossing labelers made today that make similar ones, but the font is different, and they don't work very well. I'm looking for an older one that I'm sure almost all of you used or had at one point. I also need some of the red glossy plastic tape, enough to print about three feet of labels. I used to have a roll of the tape, but I can't find it. I will purchase a spool if necessary, but it's hard to even find the glossy tape, as the newer refills are a thinner plastic, and most are matte finish. If anyone has one they don't mind lending me, that would be great. I have a found a few on ebay, and I can purchase one there worst case, but I figured I'd raid your junque drawers first! Let me know if you can help me out! Regards, Matt -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
