[NJARC] Sony Radio Speaker Question 3.2 Ohm vs 8 Ohm

By the way, if the radio has a direct coupled output stage, a 4.7 ohm 1 watt
resistor in series with the 3.2 ohm speaker will give almost a perfect match
for the 8 ohm radio. The volume will be reduced 50%, but most of these
radios have so much gain that they go into clipping at half volume or more
anyway. Try it and see.

Ed, you can get more distortion at high volume levels and your battery life
will be reduced due to the higher peak currents in the audio output stage.
But if it sounds good, use it!

I have a Sony portable transistor radio with a bad speaker in need of
replacement. The speaker is four inches diameter, 8 ohms, 2 watts.
In my junk box I have a four inch speaker, 3.2 ohms, 3 watts. I tested the
junk box speaker with the radio and it seems to work OK. Can anyone tell me
if there might be some problem in the long run by using the 3.2 ohm junk box
speaker in place of the original 8 ohm speaker? It would be nice to know
before I install the speaker (looks like I will have to use hot glue), slip
in five pot and switch sliders and button up the whole thing with a bunch of
screws.
