Among the surprise holdings of this small institution were some Webster wire recording spools, dated from the late 1950s; that is, shortly after the college's start in 1954 and before Vatican II and the sixties knocked American Catholicism for a loop. Thanks to contacts through my phonograph record research, a magnetic recording historian (there were two) knew about this small enterprise in Germantown, Philly, George Blood. He impressed me with his no-nonsense and knowledgeable approach; there was no small talk and getting to know you. He had already started digital transfers of the Philadelphia Orchestra archives, but he had a wire recorder and our very small job gave him the incentive to repair it. As I recall he redid the CD transfers because he wasn't satisfied with the sound quality, and they turned out nicely enough given that the Holy Family machine was a hand-me-down from some early friend of the college and that it wasn't an audio engineer manning the device during recordings. The highlight was the sisters' choir, singing in what I think was the Nazareth Academy chapel next door. It was a fine aural slice of college life and presumably the CDs are in the HF University archives, awaiting a stream on a Spotify channel. Alex ~~~ Alexander B. It's a haul for you, but I bought mine from the "rock shop" at the Sterling Hill Mine Museum in Northern NJ. They looked at me like I was crazy when I asked them for it and told them what it was for (they did not believe me, or care when I described it to them, despite them asking.). I have not made the time to mount any of it, and would have to look for it, but if you don't find any by an easier method, I'll break off some of it for you. I don't know much about geography in NJ, but if there are other caverns, caves, mines, etc that are tourist traps, I would guess they have rock shops too. I don't think I've ever been to one that didn't have rock shops. Most of the galena you encounter was picked for its large, impressive, crystal structure, and will sorta work as a detector. However, the good stuff is different. It's know as steel galena. Here's some mounted specimens. (1/2" diameter) See my site: http://www.skywaves.ar88.net/xtal/Steel%20Galena.html As always I'm going to encourage you all to build crystal sets. It isn't a lot of work, and there is great satisfaction in pulling signal out of the ether with something you built. Let me know if you need help. Message-ID: <59A07CE2.9080409@att.net> Hello all, I recently picked up a Panasonic RF-1600 and decided to look for a service manual. eBay had one for $35, ouch, a bit tooooooo high. Anyone have a digital/paper copy or know where I can download one? I may buy the much cheaper srvce man for my Panasonic RF-1003 on eBay but if anyone has one available for purchase or download let me know. As to the FM reception issue of the RF-1600. Seems like it was fine until I tried tuning in a slightly weaker signal station. All my other smaller and cheaper radios capture the station quite well, not the 1600. The other radios respond to my moving near their antenna, as expected, but the 1600 FM signal even changes when I touch the metal case of the radio, even the metal handle. Not sure if something is amiss inside, haven't opened it up yet. The 1600 FM signal I'm trying to capture is actually weaker sounding than an old Radio Shack Realistic FM Deskube radio! That's just not right. The 1600 should have very good reception but it can't capture a signal clearly if another station is near by on the dial. You hear both stations but cannot zero in on the weaker station like all my other radios can. Don't think it's a too wide/too narrow filter issue but I don't know enough about filters and how they would affect the signal here. BTW, the AFC section doesn't seem to make much, if any difference, when I switch it in. Any ideas on what the FM reception problem is?
