Perhaps there is an official statement somewhere. The Radio Technology Museum has always deferred to OMARC on ham-radio matters, especially operations, but things have changed. That said, we really don't have space for a permanent ham station in the current RTM. I guess what I'm suggesting is that if a group of interested people wanted to set up a special event station, say for a weekend, that's likely possible. I've read about people doing it, but never actually spoke to anyone who actually did. (Perhaps it's something I'd find on Snopes) I'm restoring a Zenith 5S-126, the small cube radio with a black dial. The voice coil is scraping and therefore the sound is seriously distorted. Connecting another speaker to the secondary of the output xfmr sounds perfect. However, substituting a resistor for the field causes audio distortion (B+ is still within range). Not the same distortion as with the scraping voice coil. In the meantime, might anyone have a 6" replacement speaker with a 2100 ohm +/- field? Or how about some hen's teeth? Plus, I really don't need it. It's a Kuba Lugano II console, currently located in a basement in Morganville, NJ. It belonged to the owner's parents, purchased new, I think in Germany. We did not power it up, but i got the old "It worked the last time we used it". He says it has a tape deck, but I did not see it, as it is below a lid that can only be opened when powered up. I went to look at it yesterday, and while interesting, it's not really my thing. Apparently it's a very expensive and rare set, see the two attached links. A google search gives over two pages on it. Oh, one other thing, it weighs 187 pounds! It is large and requires at least a small pick up truck. I brought my jeep, and it doesn't look like it would fit in a Grand Cherokee. If interested, the owner asks that you go through me. So, email me if you're interested. Remember to bring a truck, a truss, and a few burly guys. http://www.radiomuseum.org/r/kuba_lugano_ii.html http://www.antiqueradios.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=283360 https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B7KdNXMjUpZMfm1WSnhuWHdGUFpvWTRrV092Nnd2TzdFY3pna1RZMHdZVHl6MGthWllNUzA Thanks, Bill -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Message-ID: All, I know many of you folks on this list are much more knowledgeable on hi fi gear than I am, so hoping one of you can help me out. A few years back I picked up a pair of KLH model 17s at one of our swap meets and have been using them for awhile. I had noticed that one of the two always sounded quieter, and I figured it was due to the crossover caps (I didn't have the exact same ones that were in there originally handy, so I improvised). I started tearing into it to see if I could improve it or check the connections and found it sounds funny because the tweeter is bad. After checking the other one, I found that this wasn't even the original tweeter for the unit anyway. Can anybody point me in the right direction of a replacement tweeter, preferably the one that is supposed to go in here, or at least one from the right era\construction that should match how the other one sounds? I really don't want to get rid of these as they are pretty solid construction and I was relatively happy with one blown, so I don't want to get too entrenched in high-value, hi fi gear, as I already have way more hobbies and projects than hours of the day that are "mine". For what it's worth the one that was in here was supposed to measure 8 ohms and was about 55,000 ohms. I don't know all their is to know about the KLH brand, but I imagine their tweeters went into multiple speakers that they made. They look similar to the 24s I also have (which are working). In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <978361a4-65a5-2680-8711-f9d297f2028e@ar88.net> Matt, Those speakers may well be older than you are, (ca 1970 ?) so I think your chances of finding OE tweeters are pretty remote. A quick search said: Tweeter: 1 x 1.75" direct radiator with dome. Crossover is 1500 Hz. So I think I'd just go to MCM electronics, or such, and grab a pair that will fit the holes. http://www.mcmelectronics.com/search.aspx?c=&k=tweeter&x=0&y=0 It's really important that both speakers have similar drivers, and less important exactly what they are. Because it's just a two-way system, it's important that the tweeter frequency response go down to or below 1500 Hz. A lot of stuff is designed to be a true tweeter operating in a 3-way system, with a separate mid range. I don't think you need to spend a whole lot of money to be happy. Looks more like an oscillator coil. It's probably a honeycomb type winding, impossible to duplicate manually, a coil winder is what you need. I remember seeing them in the Lafayette catalog when I was a kid. Thought that I would never need one, and now people are asking ridiculous $ for them. Additionally while it is specified 15.1 ohms, the inductance is the more important spec.. The wire is probably Litz wire.
