I should also add that the Meguiar's PlastX does a beautiful job on boatanchor knobs and plastic dial covers. I swear by the stuff.

Joe - I’ve had moderate success with dull bakelite. Take some really thin oil like 3 in 1, or sewing machine oil and wipe it on with a soft cloth and apply it to the area. Let it soak (the longer the better). After a few hours (or longer) wipe the oil off the surface and buff. Much of the color and shine should come back. Try on a remote area first.

I've been working on a Bakelite radio case for the last week or so. The Bakelite is a marble brown composition. It was very "grungy" but cleaned up well with some Dawn liquid soap and water. There are no soft spots on the case and no cracks. I've been working with various plastic cleaners including Novus. Recently I tried Brasso with no real improvement. I am getting it to a little better than a satin finish. I have a small area that shows that the cabinet originally had a high gloss finish.
What I'm trying to find out now is can this former finish be reproduced? Am I at the point of best effect or can a clear finish be put on it?
Thanks in advance.
