[NJARC] Museum Award - Not

This is upsetting given all that Lud has done and contributed to our shared
interests.

I was a faithful AWA member for many years but about 2007 or 2009 I went to
the convention, and to a member's meeting. There was a discussion, more like
a proclamation that they were going to combine the museum and the
organization. Several of us tried to establish a dialogue about how this
was not a good idea, clearly the organization would suffer. I pointed out
how and why MAARC and the Radio History Society decided that two
organizations were really necessary. The response was more like we know
what's best, we don't care to discuss it. I felt like a peon and a pimple
on a horse's .... After a few more reports on AWA and things they were
doing, but more specifically how they treated and responded to members I
decided I did not need them. There are too many organizations around that
value their members and don't treat you like "Daddy knows best." John
referred to it as snobbery and that may be a good description.

I think the rapid decline of the flea market at Rochester is a direct
reflection of AWA's treatment of the members. Roy W tried to make a
difference but it was too little too late.

They got a great museum, a super review, and an abysmal flea market, and I
wish them well, I just choose to spend my time and effort elsewhere. They
can't hold a candle to MAARC and Radio Age insofar as they treat their
members and enrich them. I remember lobbying MAARC to become affiliated with
AWA years ago, more as a reflection of comradery and shared interests. They
question posed at the time was "what do we gain," and the answer was very
little.

RIP AWA

Joe
