I was thinking about this last night, and wondered if the tension on the tube shrinking would be sufficient to hold the batteries without gluing. Tried it this morning and it was. I was a faithful AWA member for many years but about 2007 or 2009 I went to the convention, and to a member's meeting. There was a discussion, more like a proclamation that they were going to combine the museum and the organization. Several of us tried to establish a dialogue about how this was not a good idea, clearly the organization would suffer. I pointed out how and why MAARC and the Radio History Society decided that two organizations were really necessary. The response was more like we know what's best, we don't care to discuss it. I felt like a peon and a pimple on a horse's .... After a few more reports on AWA and things they were doing, but more specifically how they treated and responded to members I decided I did not need them. There are too many organizations around that value their members and don't treat you like "Daddy knows best." John referred to it as snobbery and that may be a good description. I think the rapid decline of the flea market at Rochester is a direct reflection of AWA's treatment of the members. Roy W tried to make a difference but it was too little too late. They got a great museum, a super review, and an abysmal flea market, and I wish them well, I just choose to spend my time and effort elsewhere. They can't hold a candle to MAARC and Radio Age insofar as they treat their members and enrich them. I remember lobbying MAARC to become affiliated with AWA years ago, more as a reflection of comradery and shared interests. They question posed at the time was "what do we gain," and the answer was very little. The rest of the time, they broadcast a repeating 20-hour loop of earlier shows, that is updated periodically. http://www.albumzone.co.uk/Albumzone/Current_Programme_Play-out.html CLICK: Albumzone Server *But, here's the real solution:* Then I came to my senses, and contacted Rich, There is an archive of Album Zone material where you can pick and choose, pause and play, and do it on your schedule. https://www.mixcloud.com/thealbumzone/ Next step is to get this feeding a proper sound system. I looked at the Croydon radio we have on display in the museum and thought "that radio looks awfully familiar". Anyway, I speculated that the listing on the data plate of D.R. Co. might be Delco Remy so looked it up in the Riders index. Nothing close listed there but right after Delco Remy is Detrola. Bingo!! That name sprung from my brain as the radio that was familiar to me. Sure enough, the model 136 (that was on the nameplate of the museum radio) was listed in Riders VIII (that's number 8 for you millennials who did not get Roman Numerals in school). Going to the Riders the layout and tube complement matched Joe's description. The museum radio does not have an eye tube but Riders listed models with and without the eye tube. I should mention that the museum radio is on loan to the museum from Phil Vourtsis. Apparently the Croydon designation was a private brand for some store chain as was common in the thirties. He positions this receiver as Bletchley Park's preferred interception receiver of German communication during WWII. He shows the techniques applied to breaking the NAZI enigma encryption and related methods to wireless decryption methods today. Finally, Joe will show how he incorporated the 1941 AR-88 RF design in his electronics active component lab by having the students simulate, in PSPICE and LTSPICE the AR-88 tracked RF sections and how the existing 1941 vacuum tube design compares to a modern FET RF design - given the AR-88 existing inductors and capacitors but changing the bias to reflect the differences between the Pentode Vacuum tube and the FET model. Joe Jesson W2JEJ (was KC2VGL) is currently the CEO of RFSigint Inc, a Wireless IP/Patent advisory service. Patent claims are compared and mapped and expert witness offerings on IoT, M2M, Telematics, and Telemetry patents. CKAC 730 KHz is in Montreal. There are nights when it overpowers 740. I can null it a bit here, but you're 500 miles further south and likely not so lucky. Here in Maine, AM DX can be quite interesting. Give the upper end of the band around 1400 to 1600 a try. Each night I have a pile-up of 3 stations on close to one frequency. That GE 408 AM/FM radio I'm currently using gives me only a ballpark idea of where things are on the band. I sometimes birddog with my Grundig Satellit 650 it to see what's what, but it's kind of like apples and oranges with the different antennas. The other thing is I have to give them some separation as the oscillators can be heard singing away if they are too close. When I was living down in NJ, it wasn't quite as bad as my proximity to those 2 stations here. 860 KHz is another French station that booms in. Back to the 730 KHz station... I think they did something with the transmitter over the last year or so, as it is now more powerful. It could also be an antenna change. Recently, propagation has been, at least here, a lot better. Even FM DX is perking up. I used to be able to figure out where I was by tuning in WOR on 710, WCBS 880 and WBBR (formerly WNEW) 1130. You could also use WPHT 1210 as a reference frequency. You could try to null the station you don't want by simply turning the radio slightly. Montreal is almost directly north of you and Toronto is to the NW. For me, the quirky thing with all of this is that I really should have a tough time with 740 as they are beaming to the south. I'm about as east of Toronto as you can get and they boom in here most nights. On your Philco 38-4, is the antenna able to rotate or are you using a long wire? So, good luck with your newfound DX and get ready for the AM DX contest in January. It was definitely French, and a couple of you replied (both on and off list) that it's probably 730, which makes sense. I live in the Bridgewater area, and I get horrendous interference sounds on AM, which seems to be on multiple harmonics, on any radio I ever try. The last time I tried to do a DXpedition I shut off everything electronic in my house and did it by an oil lamp, so I know it's nothing I'm powering. My antenna is probably not ideal either. I have a 50 foot long coax cable ran to a UHF\HDTV antenna in my attic. This was recycling an attempt to get OTA HDTV where I live. It certainly works better than nothing. The radio is grounded to my radiator. Regardless of the less than ideal set up, it's been nice to actually give listening in a chance. Thanks for the advice. Read below for details on the AR-88 talk and the club's other activities.Best, Alex DAVID SARNOFF RADIO CLUB OCTOBER 2016 MEETING Design History and Restoration of the RCA AR-88 Interception Receiver Joe Jesson W2JEJ * Tuesday, October 18, 2016, 7:30 PM * American Red Cross, 707 Alexander Road, Suite 101, Princeton, NJ 08540. See http://n2re.org/ for map and directions. While initially exploring the history of wireless security, Joe presents the finding, acquiring for the Sarnoff Museum on The College of NJ campus, and restoring the RCA AR-88. Joe is an engineering researcher on a DOT grant and teaches, as Adjunct and Visiting Professor at TCNJ, several engineering classes and Labs. I'm trying to get an oddball Halloween costume together and an accessory I'd like to add on is an 80s or 90s mobile phone that I can lash to my shoulder. Anyone in the Ocean/Monmouth area have one I could use for a day? I'm also going to be headed down to Burlington today to pick up a Grundig console (yes, I know, I must hate myself) so I can get one from down around there too. Perhaps the museum has one in a random pile of donated crap? I'd be happy to donate a few bucks in exchange. Please let me know ASAP.
