Hi Joe,
Arduino is a really interesting phenomenon, but it goes in a different
direction from the
stick-some-components-in-a-circuit-card-an-have-a-radio situation we
were used to. The wiring is usually pretty simple, but not as organized
as the "put the 10K resistor BROWN-BLACK-ORANGE here" situation. You'll
likely have to read a schematic and count pins. All the rest is SMOP
(simply a matter of programming). Fortunately, most projects involve a
pre-written "sketch" (program) that you may want to hack to get your
desired results.
One probably ought to start on wikipedia:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arduino It's interesting that Ardunio was
the bar where these guys hung out.
What the Jameco kit has going for it is convenience, but it's rather
overpriced. I'd also check on the capabilities of the freq. counter.
I'm not sure Arduino can do more than a couple MHZ without additional
circuitry.
The last Arnuino UNO's I bought out of China via Ebay were $3.50 each
shipped. Inspired by Joe's email, I just ordered a couple of the LCD
"shields" with push buttons, as seen in the Jameco kit, for 3 bucks
each. There are comprehensive starter kits, most including LCD display
and even a stepping motor, in the $25-50 range. (Ebay)
The reality here in the 21st Century is that it's more cost effective to
sell a complete item, like an Arduino board, than to try to kit up a
bunch of parts and write assembly instructions. The end product would
get really expensive.
However, modern microcontrollers give us the capability to do things
that would have been a real PITA in the old days. Consider the
simulated Marconi Cape Cod spark transmitter that feeds this demo:

I took deliver of an Arduino, plugged it into my PC, loaded the
development software (free) and checked that the LED on the circuit card
blinked. Then I used Google to find an Arduino Morse code beacon
sketch, that flashed Morse on the LED. After an hour of hacking I had
it feeding Morse as as a 240 Hz square wave (there was a built-in
instruction for this) to a simple LC circuit to make spark-like RF,
In the late 20th Century, it would have taken me weeks to do this, even
though I have some background in micros. Now it's trivial.
I'll let Klancer tell you about Rasberry-Pi. He has one grabbing AP
news off the Internet and feeding it to a WWII teletype at the Museum.
Enough,
Al
