[NJARC] Please God, Help me stop the Muzak!

Matt has a point. A quick look at Title 17 of the U.S. Code (i.e., federal copyright law) suggests that a lot depends on things such as the size of your store, number of speakers etc. The copyright statutes have inclusions and exemptions. I couldn't give you a definitive answer because I'm not familiar with that area of the law. Since Title 17 is highly technical and somewhat difficult to understand, I wouldn't suggest that you and your boss try to figure it out for yourselves.
Your best bet would be a quick consultation with an intellectual-property attorney.
