In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <15209dd86c8-239a-1766f@webprd-a04.mail.aol.com> This has been in the works for the last few years. Pop Com and Monitoring Times were talking about this before they went away. AM is all but gone in Europe and SWL is but a whimper of what it was. Just look at the proliferation of Satellite and Internet radio just to see where all of this is going. What we as a generation that appreciates crisp fidelity are seeing, are those who eschew all of that for ear buds! Just my .02? worth. If you're new to this, might I suggest you bring a simple transistor portable with which to experiment. Something with a readable, resettable dial is best. Don't shy away from a digital readout. A headset is suggested because room 9032A can get really noisy. If you have a Y-cord bring it along, so two can listen at once for instructional purposes. That site is now part of the InfoAge Science History Museum where, on January 10, the EME, or "earth-moon-earth" bounce, will be recreated, marking the date when the historic transmission both left its mark and its signal, in 1946. In fact, the radio amateurs intend to use that same dish, which has long since been demilitarized and refurbished. The TLM-18 received those first historic signals during its time of active service on that site as a ground station for the TIROS 1 and 2 weather satellites and for Project Vanguard. The commemorative transmission will occur on 23 centimeters from the station of the Ocean Monmouth Amateur Radio Club, N2MO, sent by members of that club as well as hams from Princeton University an d the science museum. The dish's primary role, as used by Daniel Marlow, K2QM, is to help observe radio pulsars as well as radiation from the Milky Way. Marlow teaches physics at Princeton University and serves on the board of InfoAge. The TLM-18 is being made available for the amateurs' moonbounce on a secondary basis. Nevertheless, promising this group the moon - and then delivering - is going to be just as historic an event as it had been back in 1946. Up here in Maine, between Bangor and Portland, I'm about 50 miles or so from any antenna and my neighbors don't seem to have much luck with reception. Although, on the other hand, they're not using a dtv antenna. Just the same, I've been considering giving it a try to get off of the cable. I have no interest in satellite. What I liked about one of the selections from BJ's was the duplex antenna. It kind of reminded me of a stacked beam set side to side. BTW... while we are on this subject, have you considered trees, buildings, and elevation? I have some elevation, it's the trees that I can't see through. Most of the transmitters are just below Little Rock, about 60 miles away. ?PBS and Fox are due east and the rest of the commercial stations are NNE on Shinall Mountain at an elevation of 1000 feet. ?As luck has it, my location and the transmitter antennas are elevated above the line of sight distance but low flying aircraft do interfere for a few minutes every now and then. The antennas are in the attic so corrosion is a non issue. ?The local trees don't seem to be in the line of sight path either. ?One NOS Radio Shack long distance VHF / UHF antenna is aimed due east for PBS and Fox and two UHF stacked bow tie antennas take care of all of the stations on Shinall Mountain so ABC, CBS, NBC and two other independents come in nice and clear. CBS and ABC have three different programming channels while PBS has four so we get 14 channels, 15 if you count VTN. ?Don't really miss cable since most of the programs are pretty much dumbed down and on an endless repeating schedule. We also have streaming video off of the internet and the wife has Amazon Prime so we bought the $100 "box." ?Discovered Pluto which has quite a bit of "Nova" style programming. ?There is a lot of repeat programming on Pluto too but it changes monthly. ?Never thought I would like the 24/7 cat channel or Neil Tyson 24/7, but I do get a kick out of it every now and then! ?PBS is there too so all of the recent programs are available if I missed it OTA. So all in all, I am quite happy with the way things have turned out. ?Might invest in the Channel Master OTA DVR but so far, the lost convenience of going back to catch a missed word or two hasn't been a real problem.Jim From: TrainBee via NJARC To: njarc at mailman.qth.net Sent: Wednesday, January 20, 2016 11:12 AM Subject: Re: [NJARC] DTV Reception Map Recently at BJ's I saw 2 or 3 DTV antennas for sale.? While you're at it, please try to take a picture of you and your rig (or if you're camera shy and not a selfie fan, just your rig.) Add a short write-up of some technical points (model, antenna, power supply, etc.), conditions and any interesting stations and it would be much appreciated. Last night, although no exceptional reception was otherwise happening, there was a window here in the early evening when the Philadelphia stations were stronger than usual for some reason. WNTP on 990, that never comes in here at night due to a deep null protecting co channel CKGM in Montreal, was clearly audible. Also KYW 1060, usually buried by WEPN 1050 from nearby New York was listenable too. The WPHT on 1210 that is normally weak, was as strong as WLIB from New York on 1190! 1350 from York Pa was audible too, as was 1160 from Lehighton Pa. Really weird conditions that only lasted an hour or so. Did anyone else catch that? -----Original Message----- From: NJARC [mailto:njarc-bounces at mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of David Snellman Sent: Thursday, January 21, 2016 6:34 PM To: E. Here's a report from the strong-local-signals zone, here in Jersey City: Friday and Saturday were pretty poor. I got distracted, and I'm just getting serious tonight. There's no sign of Caracas on 750, or any of the Cubans. I had heard Cuba's Radio Rebelde parallel on 600 and 670 at the DXpedition, but no joy here. The log so far tonight using the Drake R8B so I can listen to just one sideband, and snuggle up to the locals: (This is with the home-brew loop.) WHO 1040 Des Moines IA, WSB 750 Atlanta, KXEL 1540 Water Loo IA, WSCR 670 Chicago, and KMOX 1120 St. Louis. So things aren't that bad. Ed, you're a little farther out, but maybe not far enough for crystal-set DX. Here, even with a very good xtal set, I just can't hear anything between the local. You guys a little farther out need to get it in gear. Good DX, Al Al Klase ? For those who would want more than pictures, put August 24-28 on your calendar when the Collings Foundation will bringing a B17 and a P51c to Wall Township. You can walk through the B17 and even go for a ride if you have some spare change and the guts to go for it. You can find out more at their web site www.collingsfoundation.org. My dad was a flight engineer/top turret gunner on a B17 with the 303rd Bomb Group--The famous Hell's Angels. Just one walk thorough the Collings B17 taught me more about his courage than I ever imagined--and I have a great imagination. Catch up with me at the next meeting and I can tell you more. Best wishes.
