I'm fairly well-versed in the history of stencil saxes and this one really piqued my interest. My research identified the real maker and who it was ostensibly made for. However, I can find nothing about a "WOR." I have seen stencil horns (Made by a major manufacturer to order for third party sellers), sold by Dorn & Kirschner, a Newark musical instrument dealer that those of us of a certain age remember as being the source of all things musical when we were in grade school. I've seen mouthpieces for NEMC, the National Educational Music Company, founded in Newark and at one time the largest band instrument rental company in the country. > > That said, from various pieces of information, I believe this WOR sax was made for the in-house orchestra of WOR-AM in the 20s or at the latest, the 1930s. The only proof I have (and it's really conjecture) is that the WOR stencil is made up of lightning bolts with additional lightning bolts surrounding the word "WOR." That lightning bolt font is very similar to the font used by RKO Radio Pictures from 1929-1936 in their opening screen logo. This is the same time period as the sax itself and would seem to fit with the period of WOR's in-house orchestra. > > Any experts out there who might be able to corroborate? > > > - Scott D. This year we will be doing something different. John, K2TQN has agreed to give a talk during our lunch and we will be in an upstairs meeting room. There is an elevator to the second floor. We will still do the same meet and greet in the parking lot before and after weather permitting. I am attaching a PDF file which describes the subject of the talk that John will be giving. We promised at least 20 for the room so I would like to see as big a turnout as possible for our luncheon this year. Spouses and guests are always welcome. If you're poking around a circuit that has failed, look at the resistor color codes. Sometimes, if a resistor overheats, the color code bands will change color - orange to brown, blue to black, and so forth. If you know your preferred numbers for resistors, you might find a resistor with a value that isn't made. This is where the circuit was overheating, and you're probably very close to discovering the problem. The problem with this technique is that you have to look at and decode all the resistors. If automation and computer vision is more your thing, [Parth] made an Android app that will automatically tell you the value of a resistor by pointing a camera at it. The code uses OpenCV to scan a small line of pixels in the middle of the screen. Colors are extracted from this, and the value of the resistor is displayed on the screen. The app is available for free on the Google Play store. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Allied Knight never published the technical information for any of their products, so you won't find a schematic too easily. The best shot you have is to create an eBay search for the assembly manual for this unit and add it to your watch list. The assembly manual will include the schematic as well as the assembly instructions. Good luck with it... 73, Chuck AC2DP From: Joe Devonshire via NJARC Sent: Wednesday, May 20, 2015 8:54 PM To: njarc at mailman.qth.net ; dvhrc at mailman.qth.net ; NEARC_Radio at yahoogroups.com Subject: [NJARC] Knight Radio - additional info Just remember Reply = Poster Reply All = Everyone _________________________________________________________ I hope this doesn't overload the server. The manual reject doesn't work, nor will it shut down at the end of the record. Looking at the attached photo, The problem is obviously the large gear (green) not rotating to engage the platter gear (blue). When the selector is moved to the Reject position, rod (yellow) moves and pushes against bar (red). Likewise, when the arm reaches the end of the record, the other end of bar (white) also engages bar (red). None of theses actions has any effect on gear (green). If I manually rotate large gear (green) to engage the platter gear (blue) all works according to Hoyle. The problem seems to be with the (red) bar. I did notice that the release in the spindle will not retracr to drop the record when I manually activate the mechanism, but I'm hoping that will be "small potatoes" after I figure out the main problem. I've searched but cannot find any literature on the mechanism. Can anyone (Phil??) help? Thanks, Bill -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Here are some photos of the radio I have. It is neither a 80AC or A9775. Someone before me did a recap on this radio, but they didn't get it to play. I found this at a rummage sale. I have to check the tubes but as you all know, that's only part of getting it to work. Here are photo's from the rear and overhead of the chassis. 6D6 - 6A7 - 75 - 42 - 80 I'm trying to find some information, schematic if possible, for a Knight Tombstone Radio. So far, I found color photo evidence of the radio at the Allied Radio site http://www.alliedcatalogs.com/catalogs/1936/ on page 118, but that's about it. I do know that Knight was a name used by Allied Radio and possibly built by Pacific Radio. I also found a related chassis that appears to be similar in a photo. The label in the cabinet was damaged, so any information from that is useless. I cannot find anything in Riders or Beitman's. Here is what I know, Name on Dial - Knight Tubes (5) 80, 75, 42, 6D6, 6A7. Bands: 3 Serial: 25-7008 Model from internet source: H9801 Possible related model: 9701H Manufactured year: 1936 The Allied Radio site doesn't all copying or printing. At least you can see what I am talking about. Does anyone have any more information on this radio? Thanks in advance. I figured it would be a lubrication issue, but everything seem to be moving freely. I pretty much ruled out anything broken, as there's not one piece of plastic, unlike other "modern day" turntable that I've seen. It does look like there may have been an attempted repair, as there is an over abundance of oil on everything. I'm pretty good with mechanical repairs, having been a technician for Sony Superscope for about 6 years "way back" working exclusively on tape recorders, and repaired teletype machines in the army and while at AT&T. Just thought this might be a common fault with this turntable. Now...what's the difference between a pawl and a bellcrank...?? (If I get frustrated I could always go to the "pub" for a few and find a "lib", but why??) Probably won't get back to it for a few days, spending allot of time with my wife after some surgery. I'll post my progress. Thanks again, Bill On 5/22/2015 00:11, Phil Vourtsis wrote: > Sounds like a binding trip pawl. I'll be glad to work with anyone or group, organization etc. in order to fulfill both of our needs. I have a Gates BC1-T 1KW Broadcast Transmitter available for anyone who wants it. It uses a quad of 833A's which I will have available with the transmitter as well as thew other tubes (807's etc) it requires. It is in either working condition or mostly working condition. I used it almost daily up to about 4 years ago. It is currently tuned to the 160M Amateur band on 1.885kc. The oscillator and power amp etc stages are also tuned to 160M, but could be tuned to other frequencies within it's realm very easily without changing any components. It could also be retuned to the Broadcast band very readily if need be. That is my only reason for wanting to find it a new home. I just need the space. If you really want it, I'll make you an unbeatable deal! You'll have to come and get it though as it's currently in my basement Hamshack and I want it out of there to make room for more vintage Amateur gear. I just need the space.
