[NJARC] TV Capacitors

Matt -

I have an RCA 721TS sitting on the bench for awhile now awaiting several
capacitors. These are rated at 1000v. Can you order some of the common ones
like .035 and .1 rated at this voltage? I’m sure several of the other very
collectable sets such as the 621TS, 6030TS etc from RCA use these also and
are probably in demand by people in the club working on TVs.

Thanks

Ken

Dave thanks for the article and the website. Never knew about
thevinylfactory.com. Amazing stuff!

I saw Jack White at MSG a few weeks ago. The guy is a living legend!!

Wow! Anybody know the story behind it?

Vintage Electronics Enthusiasts:
For those of you who were at the meeting last night, you may recall I made
an announcement that the NJARC Capacitor program is going to organize a
special order of capacitors that we don't normally carry. Many of you have
mentioned to me in passing during meetings that you are working on a set
(whether it be a radio, television, piece of test equipment, etc.) that
needed a cap value that the club did not have. As most of you know many
electronics supply houses have minimum order and shipping costs that may
make buying those "one or two" caps you need to finish your set somewhat
cost prohibitive. It is my intention to ask you all "what you need" to see
if we can get a larger order together to help members save some money and
get their sets up and running again! This request is limited to electronic
parts (not trim\cosmetic pieces like knobs... contrary to what was said last
night, we don't have a knob program today!).
Right now the most interest seems to be centered on HV television
capacitors, especially for the Pilot TV-37 television. Others have
mentioned they are working on Hallicrafters televisions. I know there is
also interest in restoring Philco Predictas (that have common failure parts
like fusistors and "network" parts, but my knowledge is limited on which
parts are common failure parts).
Here is what we have been asked to order so far:
Electrolytics:
22mfd @ 600v47mfd @ 600v
Film\Poly:
.005[.0047] mfd @ 6000v (2x for Pilot TV).005[.0047] mfd @ 3000v (2x for
Pilot TV).001 mfd@ 4000v (1x for Pilot TV).002[.0022]mfd @ 1000v (2x for
Pilot TV).03 [.033]mfd @ 6000v (for Halicrafters TV).0015 mfd @ 1000v (1x in
Philco Predicta Holiday).

Ceramic\Mica:300 pf @ 3000V (2x for Pilot TV)
If you have a cap you need that is not listed above, please reply to me with
the value and I will see if we can add it to the order. The list is
currently focused primarily on Electrolytic and Paper replacment caps, but I
would be glad to include more Mica\Cermamic values if you have specific
needs.
I am asking those of you that have electronics knowledge that surpasses mine
(which should be most of you!) please assist me with looking for
opportunities to combine values that we receive for this special order to
maximize practicality/cost. As an example, in the list above we will likely
decide to only order .005 at 6000v to cover both the 6KV and 3KV requirement
for the pilot TVs (and perhaps some of the other values if the tolerances
allow). The more we buy of one specific value, the cheaper the costs could
be.
I especially need your help for identifying values of caps that "don't
normally fail" like ceramics and micas that you need\we should consider
stocking.
As a reminder, not only do we stock most standard-value electrolytic values
up to 450V and poly caps up to 630V,we have a large variety of new "low
volt" capacitors in stock, for those of you working on transistor-based
stuff:

Package TypeCapacityWorking VoltagePriceRadial1 uF50V$0.10Radial4.7
uF50V$0.10Radial10 uF50V$0.10Radial22 uF50V$0.10Radial47 uF50V$0.15Radial68
uF50V$0.10Radial100 uF63V$0.10Radial220 uF50V$0.20Radial330
uF50V$0.25Radial470 uF50V$0.25Radial680 uF63V$0.50Radial1000
uF50V$0.50Radial2200 uF50V$1.00Radial4700 uF50V$1.75

The majority of the caps are rated at 50V, and are Nichicon branded caps.
Any of the caps valued at 1 uF to 100uF should be small enough to fit in
transistor radios (modern caps are usually smaller than caps from the past),
and the larger ones are useful for other projects where caps rated 50V or
lower are required.
As previously mentioned, If you are a member who is unable to attend NJARC
meetings regularly, and are in need of specific values, I am willing to ship
orders out to you assuming you cover the cost of packaging\postage.
My goal is to take requests for the next 1-2 weeks via the
reflector\email\phone from you all, come up with a reasonable order that
accomodates as many requests as possible, and have the caps ready by the
next meeting (if possible with ordering\lead times).
Let's see what we can come up with to help each other get some more sets
back on the air!
Best Regards,
Matt Reynolds
