[NJARC] AK help needed

That design was used in many AK's;  they probably didn't think about degrading rubber 80 years in the future.  As I recall I was able to get away with using clear vinyl tubing but rubber is preferred.

Bill, I seem to remember that rubber fuel-line hose can replace those rubber grommets in some of those AKs such as the Model 55 and 60. The hose is available at all auto-parts stores. It's the size that used to come with those universal in-line fuel filters.

Did some Googleing   http://mattschnittker.blogspot.com/2012/04/atwater-kent-model-70.html  and found that originally there was a rubber bushing that was to engage the gear, still questionable engineering, but I guess AK didn't expect these to be around 80+ years later.

I took on a repair of an AK Type L chassis TRF with both electrical and mechanical problems.

The electrical problem is hum, which I did not delve into yet.

The mechanical problem is a slipping tuning indicator.  The variable cap shaft has a gear attached with teeth on about one half of its circumference.  The teeth of the gear  (on this radio) mesh with tape on the tuning shaft.  Obviously not good engineering as the tape is all chewed up (no pun intended).  I haven't taken the tape off yet, as I just received the set today.  There may be matching teeth on the shaft.  Anyone have experience with this problem? Thanks
