We have a coax feed from the Museum antenna system (LF-MF-HF) for sets needing an outside antenna. A distribution amplifier will provide a clean signal to multiple radios. Set up on the left side of Room 9032A if you want to connect. If you have a 10-20 foot BNC patch cord, bring it along. There will also be a couple of tuned-loop antennas on the right side of the room that you can hook up to. These work best with reasonably hot receivers, i.e., superhets. There is also a lead-in from a 100-ft outside wire on the right side of the room to feed crystal sets or other low-gain receivers. I easily counted 9 day-time stations on an NJARC Pretty-Good Xtal Set connected to this antenna. You'll need to share this. * **Earphones:* A major downside to this listening environment is that the room is acoustically live. Bring along and use headsets if at all possible. A Y-connector is helpful to share the experience with others. If you're using an xtal set or other primitive receiver, you might want to cheat with some extra audio amplification, as when the room gets noisy, you'll have a LOT of trouble hearing anything. I could use a helper or two to assist people in setting up. This will allow me to attend the Executive-Board mini meeting at 6:30PM. I'll be on site by 4 PM. We'll continue on into the night after the regular meeting as long as there is interest. I'll bring some log sheets and station lists. My favorite was the crystal set that was among the radios set up and fed with an antenna signal via an elaborate distribution network. I've been monkeying around with crystal sets for over fifty years, but the ability to tune through perhaps a half-dozen stations last night eclipsed any of my previous experiences. It was impressive! Testimony perhaps to the performance of that particular set and/or the antenna and/or the relative quietness of the rf noise environment in InfoAge's neck of the woods? Or perhaps just the ghost of Marconi smiling favorably on us last night? If you missed the opportunity to play around with the sets, you might want to make an effort to participate in the club's DX Contest or try to attend the DXPedition next year. WOWO on 1190 is hopeless at this location because of WLIB. Heard something interesting on 1410, a French language station that plays lively Spanish music. Apparently CJWI in Montreal is a station that fits that description. Listened to a Spanish station for about ten minutes on 600. Could be Cuba CMKA, but on the other hand there is a station in Puerto Rico on 1410. Wonder if it could be Puerto Rico? Could not hear WLS on 870 but did hear Cuba morse RR. Listened to 1180. Spanish. Heard and interval signal that sounded something like "doo-deedle-doo, doo-deedle-doo", if that makes sense. Could it be Havana or Radio Marti? How do they ID? I'd expect you could do this with almost any "Ricebox" ham transceiver and a home-made loop. http://www.njarc.ar88.net/LOOP/Easy_loop.pdf *And, things should be much less competitive in the other categories, especial A, B, and C.* Signals seemed weaker that I normally expect, so I had to use SSB mode to snuggle up to the strong NYC locals on 660, 770, 1050, etc. Trust me, these stations are unlikely to be as strong where you live. *You'll be much better off away from the big city.* The big difference from previous years is the disappearance of Radio Vision Cristiana on 530 (1309 miles), and ZIZ on 555 (1726 miles). I spent time listening to music on 750 with WSB, Atalanta, nulled out with the loop, hoping to snag YVKS, "Erre Cee Erre", for 2097 miles. There didn't seem to be any breaks or ID's at all, and they were so weak I couldn't tell what language was being sung. Have they change format? You can see the phenolic powder placed into the mold (on a heated plate) then after a time, the parts were removed and ready to go! Phenolic plastics would cross link polymers under heat, and was used for years until "injection" molding started to be used after WW2. I also liked the guy at the end pawning the camera! The Sylvania Tube Crusher by Kristina Panos This week, we're switching off the 'Tube and taking a field trip to Emporium, Pennsylvania, home of the Sylvania vacuum tube manufacturing plant. Now, a lot of companies will tell you that they test every single one of their products, ensuring that only the best product makes it into the hands of John Q. Public. We suspect that few of them actually do this, especially these days. After all, the more reliable the product, the longer it will be before they can sell you a new one. For Sylvania, one of the largest tube manufacturers of the golden age, this meant producing a lot of duds. A mountain of them, in fact, as you can see in the picture above. This article from the January 1957 issue of Popular Electronics vilifies forgers who used all kinds of methods to obtain defective tubes. They would then re-brand them and pass them off as new, which was damaging to Sylvania's good name and reputation. In addition to offering a reward for turning in known tube forgers, Sylvania did the most reasonable thing they could think of to quash the gray market, which was building a tube-crushing machine. Pulverizing the substandard tubes made sure that there were no "factory seconds" available to those fraudsters. After crushing shovelful after shovelful of tubes, the glass splinters were removed through a flotation separation process, and the heavy metals were recovered. Did we get you all hot about tubes? Here's how Mullard made their EF80 model. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I'm working on a Zenith 5Z08b chassis from 1957. It has the Silver Mica disease. The IF's in question are the 95-1101 and the 95-1102. I rebuilt the 95-1101 and have favorable results. I used 150 pf mica caps. to replace the mica disc. The 95-1102 is similar, but has a 3rd cap in the circuit. It looks like I can get away with a 150 pf for the coils but the 3rd is where I'm stuck. I'm thinking that since the mica disc is the same thickness all around, another 150 pf would be the correct replacement. Neither the Sams or the Beitmans schematics are of much use. So, I was thinking if there was a data sheet out there covering Zenith IF's, I could use that as a reference. Can anyone offer any thoughts? Thanks.
