From mattr04 at hotmail.com Sun Feb 1 12:21:24 2015 From: mattr04 at hotmail.com (Matt Reynolds) Date: Sun, 1 Feb 2015 12:21:24 -0500 Subject: [NJARC] slightly off-topic - International Return Postage alternative to IRC? Message-ID: All, Many of you on this distribution are licensed HAMs, and I figured at some point in time some of you have collected QSLs from international destinations. I was hoping some of you still do this today and could offer some advice. One of my non-radio-related hobbies requires using the postal service, including sending SASEs (Self Addressed Stamped Envelopes) as a courtesy to the recipients. Most of the time this is done domestically, and is not an issue. On occasion though I've sent a few pieces of mail internationally with SAEs and International Reply Coupons (IRCs) in place of a US stamp, and this was successful. Unfortunately, I no longer have any that are valid. I recently started this hobby back up again, and found out that in late 2013 the USPS decided it would no longer sell IRCs. However, the Universal Postal Union (which the US is a member of), is required to honor the last production run of IRCs until 2017. I have been doing some reading and this is a point of contention in QSL collecting circles for awhile. It looks like many HAMs have switched over to "green stamps" (US currency) for the return postage alternative, but this is apparently a grey area and there is debate on the legality\morality\risk on doing this. Unfortunately, without IRCs, and the fact that US postage is only good for within or to leave the US, I don't know of a legal alternative. I was just wondering if someone had any advice on the subject (besides changing hobbies...). Does anybody out there still collect QSLs and deal with this? Maybe some of you are familiar with resources\alternatives I'm not? Any help\advice would be appreciated. Regards, Matt -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... In the mean time you can download a PDF of the brochure on the conference web page, plus view a flipbook of it right on line. There's also a printable pre-registration form that you can download and print on you home printer in MSWord. Be sure to visit the estate auction web pages, there are about 5 pages with photos of Steven Smith's collection that will be sold on Thursday evening, plus there are also photos of some of Ralph Moorhouse's collection which will be part of the Friday afternoon auction. Here's a URL tot the main Charlotte web page; http://antiqueradiocharlotte.homestead.com/2015.html The Sheraton is taking reservations so if you'd like to attend you better get your room reserved. I personally have a example of a SX-10 that needs front panel work that I'd like to do to it someday. Like you, I've had mine for over umpteen years and still need that "roundtuit" to complete the necessary work to it. I feel the work it needs will be worth it in the end to preserve a piece of history rather than have a conglomeration of two different models. Best regards and the best of luck in whatever you decide to do with it. I got one when I joined the club back in the 90's. Does anyone know if it is still out there? For the electronics stores in NJ, may I suggest we list them along with added info regarding mail order and an on-line catalog. While I'm not in NJ anymore, I'd support a retailer that would support our club. At times, price is not everything. I'm still trying to find data sheet(s) for 40's to 60's Zenith IF transformers. If there is tech information out there, it's impossible to find. I'm looking for data sheets for the tube radios only. I have a sheet that was cobbled together, but it only has a few of the IF's that Zenith used. Joe Devonshire In a message dated 2/9/2015 2:51:47 P.M. Two buddies and myself bought 3 of them, thus allowing Williams Electronics in Edison to become an IMSAI dealer. (IMSAI had a 3 computer minimum purchase to become a dealer back then.) I think Art ?? was the one we bought them from? The owner was an old-time ham and builder. He made sure they always had a large selection of components and all kinds of things for do-it-yourself projects. You could get lost in that store. DX potential here as the 50K signal no longer covers up dozens of other stations. So far I've not been able to catch any of the higher pwr stations like KGOW in TX, WAGL in SC or KLNG in IA. I did hear one faint daytime signal but no ID, sunset activity has not been productive so far. I assume some/many of you are using home brewed loop antennae for AM broadcast band DXing. But does anyone use a plain ole, everyday, run-of-the-mill, garden variety antenna like the S-A-T or Terk? Just curious as to what type of antenna for broadcast band DXing is most common among the brethren, including amplified antennae like the Twin Coil Ferrite from C Crane. - Louis njarc-request at mailman.qth.net wrote: > Send NJARC mailing list submissions to > njarc at mailman.qth.net > > To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit > http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/njarc > or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to > njarc-request at mailman.qth.net > > You can reach the person managing the list at > njarc-owner at mailman.qth.net > > When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific > than "Re: Contents of NJARC digest..." > > > Visit our web site - See http://www.njarc.org > _______________________________________________ > > > Today's Topics: > > 1. He has a friend at the National Guard Museum down there with what is probably a late 1930's console (I haven't seen it) that has some family history. He'd like to have it restored - and is willing to pay reasonably. He is located in the Wall Township area, down near our museum. Is there anyone in the club who would be interested? Since Bob is one of our supporters, I'd like to get it done but don't have time myself. Please contact me and I'll put you in touch. Thanks. Message-ID: <54F0BEED.2020004@att.net> My old oil burner made some noise, if the electrodes weren't gapped correctly it could be pretty noisy. My new Weil Mclain gas boiler produces a bit of RFI but it's not real noisy but at some point in its startup for heating, I get a lot of loud raspy static on the AM radio. It only lasts for seconds to maybe half a minute at times and then it's just plain ole annoying static. What can I do to suppress all the RFI from the boiler? BTW, did anyone get my post about WQEW 1560 being off air? Sent it on 2/20/15 but I never got my copy. Caught a handful of DX stations on this frequency last week till last night but the new owner WFME AM is now on air with 50K watts so any DXing 1560 will be very limited going forward. The electrical problem is hum, which I did not delve into yet. The mechanical problem is a slipping tuning indicator. The variable cap shaft has a gear attached with teeth on about one half of its circumference. The teeth of the gear (on this radio) mesh with tape on the tuning shaft. Obviously not good engineering as the tape is all chewed up (no pun intended). I haven't taken the tape off yet, as I just received the set today. There may be matching teeth on the shaft. See how many things he talks about, is about you. ?He has a great sense of humor. ?? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IWE7FrVY9T4 Great sense of humor... All righty then! Maybe that's on display?in some of his other videos. I didn't laugh (or even say hi hi) once. I guess he sees himself as some kind of a ham radio "shock jock". That works better if you are actually funny. He kind of sounds like a lot of the guys on 75 meters. Kvetching about DX'ers, durn Contesters, traffic nets ?or anything he isn't personally into and "cha llenging"?hams he deems? to "not have b****" ? to meet me at the hamfest to settle whate ver his fevered mind thinks needs to be settled.?At least he left Obama out of it... ? ? But there is no "truth" revealed here, just the usual jejune opinions that have been trotted out by disaffected types for as long as I can remember. Now it would be possible to put together a funny bit about ham radio operators and their idi osyncras ies,?like i f the late, great ?Jean Shepherd?took on the subject. But that would take real humor, nuance, humanity and generosity of spirit to achieve, w hich is not displayed by this gentleman, ?at least by the evidence of the linked video.
