I see you are the guy who manages the email list for the NJARC. I am moving and want to reduce my radio count. I have a National NBS-1 that I would like to find a new home for. I thought maybe one of your club members may be interested in purchasing it. I did not feel comfortable joining the list to send one item so I am contacting you. The radio works. Less than five minutes ago I tuned in to a few SW stations. I have a manual for the radio. A few of the tubes have been replaced with transistors. The included photos have a picture of the modifications. If you think the folks on your list would be interested I'd sure appreciate it if you would post this email and accompanying pictures. I found a bunch of Steinway's on eBay including a 1917 STEINWAY M 5'7" GRAND PIANO. REBUILT & REFINISHED for only $19,900.00 You still have to recone the tweeter for about $250.00 and the base of the radio is showing some aging (fine crackling) in the finish. So it still needs to be refinished at "low expense"! What did you expect for only $19,100? And you still have to arrange for pickup! njarc-request at mailman.qth.net wrote: > Send NJARC mailing list submissions to > njarc at mailman.qth.net > > To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit > http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/njarc > or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to > njarc-request at mailman.qth.net > > You can reach the person managing the list at > njarc-owner at mailman.qth.net > > When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific > than "Re: Contents of NJARC digest..." > > > Visit our web site - See http://www.njarc.org > _______________________________________________ > > > Today's Topics: > > 2. It works great - just need to find the right combination of pins 1, 2 and 3 for any component. Pretty simple. Great for getting value ranges for variable caps, and transistor hfe and other stuff. Only problem I had is it only measures inductance when you connect an IF can. I was hoping to get both L and C values. Oh well, can't expect everything for 15 bucks (or "free" in my case). All the 1s are connected together so you can use any one of them, just use whichever one is most convenient for the lead you're trying to insert. In other words, you can use any 1 plus a 1 or a 3, or a 1 and a 2 and a 3, or a 2 and a 3, but not more than one 1. (Good thing I can read Chinese! Not.) The best part: It's 15 bucks shipped from Duluth, GA. - http://www.ebay.com/itm/221961865013?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT There are a bunch of these floating around on E-bay, but this appears to be the latest revision, with a really nice display and rugged battery holder. You'll likely want to install in in some sort of box to carry around. All this is made possible by a modern microcontroller that has analog inputs and outputs built in, so it can make the appropriate measurements. uC data sheet here: ATmega48A, ATmega48PA, ATmega88A, ATmega88PA, ATmega168A, ATmega1688PA, ATmega328, ATmega328P datasheet - atmel-8271-8-bit-avr-microcontroller-atmega48a-48pa-88a-88pa-168a-168pa-328-328p_datasheet_complete.pdf Not much on the circuit board except the processor and an 8MHz crystal. I was thinking of doing a similar thing, but, eliminating the socket completely and just using wires with clip leads. I would probably keep the leads shorter to minimize inductance, but, as this unit does not really measure sub micro-Henry and real small capacitors anyway, maybe it does not matter. I have other similar meters that do go way down which are better for RF work. This is more ideal for average most often encountered work. ESR is Equivalent Series Resistance and leakage is effective parallel resistance of a capacitor. Leakage can be easily tested by just applying DC and measuring the current drawn. This is why some of the older electrolytics run hot. ESR is in series with the capacitor and has to be measured at an AC frequency applied where the capacitors reactance is fairly low and calculable at the applied frequency. The resistance in excess of the reactance is the ESR. ESR is more of a concern in power supply filter capacitors and leakage is more of a concern in coupling capacitors. 73 & a health 2016 - Mike Mike B. The exceptions to the above are when a capacitor is used in, for example, a high impedance circuit like a radio's AGC circuit and then even moderate leakage current plays havoc with the grid bias of the RF and IF tubes or when one is using a capacitor where very high currents are present so the ESR drops an appreciable voltage and reduces what is available to the rest of the circuit. On consumer radios, I have no problem shot-gunning all capacitors since the PITA is getting the chassis out of the receiver and there are not that many caps to really worry about. ?On commercial / military radios for example, I disconnect the filter capacitor and put near the rated voltage on it but that voltage is in series with a power resistor of a high enough value so as to limit the short circuit current to about 10 mA and a high enough wattage so the resistor only gets warm to the touch so my fingers don't blister! ? Once the capacitor reforms, and they always seem to reform since they are of higher quality then those in consumer radios, it is an easy matter to measure the voltage across the resistor with a very high impedance volt meter (DVM does nicely) and divide that value by the series resistor value. ?This gives you the leakage current for that particular capacitor. ?Sometimes the reforming goes on for several hours and once in a while, over night. ?Other times, the leakage current falls rapidly and things are good to go in less then an hour. ?It all depends on how long the capacitor sat uncharged and the quality of that capacitor. Coupling and by-pass capacitors are always suspect in all radios. ?I usually disconnect several and do the above leakage test. ?If they pass with flying colors, I move on to the smoke test, otherwise I replace all. All of this is done so the power transformer isn't stressed. ?Power transformers are usually the most expensive single component and the hardest to find replacements for. ?This is also a good reason to not put too high a value filter capacitor in as a replacement for the original. ?A larger value capacitor will have higher charging current which will cause the power transformer to get much hotter then normal due to the transformer's winding resistance and the higher charging current. ?Not to mention that the higher charging current will stress the vacuum tube rectifier too.Jim From: David Sica To: Aaron Hunter Cc: NJARC Sent: Wednesday, December 30, 2015 10:40 AM Subject: Re: [NJARC] Mega 328 Tester Tester purports to test ESR (although using an unspecified frequency and presumably a low voltage. So I decided to run a test of the multi tester against my 40+ year old Heathkit capacitor testor. First let me preface this with my electronic training. I graduated from Philadelphia Wireless Technical Institute 50+ years ago. My grades were not stellar, so I won't go into them. What I did manage to understand and learn, I've forgotten years ago. I now drive a school bus, so you can see how my electronics background has paid off. LOL I fired up my Heathkit IT-11 and tested some electrolytics and compared the results with the multi tester. The first thing I noticed this time was I had the Heathkit switched to non-electrolytic for the leakage test the other day. This is why two of the dented electrolytics tested bad then but good when forced up to a working voltage of 450 with 500 Volts applied for a minute or two. The other two dented capacitors were also forced to the working voltage, again using 500 Volts. They took several minutes to reach the working voltage, one getting warm and the other showed signs of leakage, didn't take notice if it was warm or not. The first three tests were with the Heathkit and bringing the capacitors up to the working voltage, then testing with the multi meter. (Make sure to short the capacitor before inserting in the multi meter.) I reversed the next two tests, using the multi meter first to see if there was a difference in readings after bringing the capacitor up to working voltage with the Heathkit. Notice on the 5th capacitor, I took multiple readings with the multi tester and got varying results for value. I couldn't find the specs. but it appears the 4th digit is meaningless and the 3rd questionable. To me, it seems to have an accuracy (regarding reproducibility) of about +- 10%. The last two tests were with capacitors of the same value but different manufacturers. They had even higher ESR values, which I don't know if that's good or not. I still question reforming capacitors. Did you recheck the capacitor after it sat for several days with no voltage? Years ago, when my Sansui 5000 was about 8 years old, one of the channel fuses popped. When I inserted another fuse, it worked fine until the next day when it would pop the fuse or take out the output transistor. I found if I inserted a resistor into the fuse socket first, I could then replace the fuse and use it off and on for the day, but the next day would have to do the resistor trick again. This made for difficult normal trouble shooting techniques, so I pulled the mini electrolytics on the problem board. Using the technique mentioned in an earlier email, I watched the current draw when voltage was applied and found the culprit. Once it got up to operating voltage, voltage could be applied off and on all day and the capacitor would charge quickly each time. But let it sit for a day and you'd start all over again. So again I ask, were those reformed capacitors rechecked after a few days to see if they needed reforming again? I hope my chart comes across, otherwise this email was all in vain. Yes, I have noticed what you describe, when the whole reforming process has to be repeated. ?But I was careful to mention that I only bother to reform higher quality filter capacitors like those found in high end commercial and military radios. ?The consumer and low end "commercial" radios like hallicrafters and the like; I just replace them outright. ? HP, the military and others spend the extra money to buy a better grade of filter capacitor. ?Once reformed, I have had no issues with any of them drawing excessive charging current days or weeks later. ?But, as is often said, your mileage may vary. ? As an aside, it's funny to think that when a lot of our favorite radios were designed and built, no one was then thinking "I hope this thing lasts for 70 years!" ?But with a little TLC and modern components, it certainly has a better chance.
