Great article.
Too many people have a narrow design viewpoint on tubes locked
into their intended end use.
There is a guy in Japan along with many others (don't have link right now)
that uses all sorts of older XMTR tubes as audio amps. Yeah, the filaments
are very hungry and the plate supply >800VDC but their response is 0 - 100Khz within 1dB!
I spend most of my hobby time checking out tubes.
Working on a 12V regen design for the upcoming NJARC AM DX contest.
Finished the audio section with a 12AE6 & 12K5. A 12VDC plate supply results
in reasonable output for listening (~30mw). Using a 12EA6 for the RF amp & regen detector.
The tubes run REAL hot but no problems with the 12V B+ supply.
Best part, tubes are far more forgiving of bad designs - like mine.
Just one drawback, drop them and the don't bounce like a transistor or IC...
