"There are no plans to abandon analog radio in the U.S., Dennis Wharton
(an executive vice president at the NAB) said."

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-04-20/norway-to-turn-off-analog-fm-radio-in-sign-of-global-shift

(I don't put much stock in his comment. If there's money to be made,
someone will do what it takes to make it, i.e., bribe Congress, pressure
the FCC, etc... Look at how Comcast is getting their way)

 > I'm sure it's just a matter of time before analog radio will go by
the wayside as TV has :(

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IBiquity

"IBOC can operate on both AM band and FM band broadcasts either in a
digital-only mode, or in a "hybrid" digital+analog mode. Most
broadcasters for the foreseeable future WILL use the hybrid method"

Great for sound quality, bad for DXing. I can't hear a thin' besides WOR
on 710 because their IBOC signal wipes out every other station on that
frequency.

> What is gained by scrapping FM modulation and going to an all digital format? ?Admittedly, it might possibly add more content beyond FM stereo and other pilot carrier formats already in place but it doesn't appear to have any better signal quality. ?So is this just a quantity versus quality issue?
> When TV went digital in the US, we lost the frequencies below channel 7 and above channel 69 all of which were reallocated to other services. ?Similar savings do not appear to be in store for the FM radio band.
> BTW, the "HD Radio" technology can also be used on the AM band according to Wikipedia where there is an improvement in fidelity and the addition of stereo programming using a bit more then the original AM channel bandwidth.
> Getting back to the original question asked by Ed, it seems that there are no plans at this time to abandon FM in the US. ?But I guess this could change at any time. ?It is kind of sobering to realize that all of the radios I have collected over the years will go the way of spark technology if digital prevails and replaces AM and FM modulation.Jim

Called "HD Radio", on my SUV radio you can view the song titles, station's I.D. etc.? I'm sure it's just a matter of time before analog radio will go by the wayside as TV has :(
