From njarc at mailman.qth.net Sat Nov 1 19:12:01 2014 From: njarc at mailman.qth.net (Joe Devonshire via NJARC) Date: Sat, 1 Nov 2014 19:12:01 -0400 Subject: [NJARC] Help with Hallicrafters Paint Message-ID: Greetings from Maine, I've taken on restoring a Hallicrafters SX-42 that I picked up. Fortunately, it's in pretty good condition in all regards. It does need the be recapped, and a good cleaning, but otherwise, that's it. This SX-42 looks very good on the outside. The inside has the usual crud on the chassis. One thing I would like to restore is the paint on the Band Spread Bezel. The paint on it is flaking off. Depending on the version that was manufactured, the bandspread bezel was either black or the color of the front panel. From what I've been able to find, the front panel was either a light blue or a shade of olive drab and with some brown mixed in. This is not your typical off the shelf color. Of course the front panel I have is the olive drab - brown with the bezel the same color. The purest in me wants to restore the bezel to the original color. Can anyone offer any thoughts on how I might be able to replicate this color? Unfortunately, I don't have Kuker-Haney ( http://kuckerhaneypaint.com/sb.cn ) close by to make me a can of spray paint. This radio is probably in the middle of the production run with the following found on the radio: Serial HA-68218 and on the back of the front panel is a date code: 45 DEC 20 1948? The 8 wasn't pressed onto the panel completely. Does anyone have any thoughts on what to do? Cosmetically there isn't much I need to do other than this and clean the chassis. Thanks. The original Star Trek series was supposed to be a 5 year mission. The series only lasted 3 years... until now. Star Trek Continues, a web-based, high-budget, fan-made web series will continue and complete the 5 year mission. The first three episodes are finished and online for viewing. How they managed to keep the exact look and feel of the original series is completely amazing to me. http://www.startrekcontinues.com/ Review: I just watched the First Episode, "PILGRIM OF ETERNITY". Where Apollo returns to wreak havoc on Kirk and the Enterprise in the first episode of the new series. I really enjoyed it. The actors strongly resemble the original cast, the sets are accurate, as are the sound and special effects. VIC MIGNOGNA as Capt. James T. Kirk has all his mannerisms down pact. CHRIS DOOHAN as chief engineer Lt. Cmdr. Montgomery Scott plays a believable "Scottie". If the name sounds familiar, it is, it's because he is the son of James Doohan the original Star Trek "Scottie". Visit the web page which has more information and also the first three episodes. In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <5457AB48.6080604@optonline.net> Dave, All my experiences with tapped volume controls were with the tap providing _variable_ loudness compensation at low volume settings. I had an amp with a volume control that was made of unobtanium, so I replaced it with a pot without the tap connection. The result was loss of bass at low volume settings, acceptable for that application. There really is no way, that I can think of, to eliminate the tap and maintain the desired fidelity at low levels. It's possible that it is part of the AVC, but I've never seen it used in such a way. Is the tap going to an RC circuit in the audio stage? If so, then it definitely is for compensation and not AVC. Hope this helps. This will have a minor effect on the AVC threshold, i.e. the AVC will take effect at a slightly lower RF signal level. I seriously doubt you'd notice it anywhere except the lab bench. The tap in this set has no role in tone compensation. Good luck, Al Al Klase ? On the RCA reflector, IIRC, it was mentioned that some capacitors had the old logo embossed on then. So either RCA made capacitors for high end receivers such as the AR-88 or the manufacturer supplied them with the logo as per procurement specification. It seems that after WW2 RCA stopped this practice. I say this because when RCA was on the carpet with the USAF and the US Senate for issues with reliability of the ARC-21 transceiver, I do not remember any mention of RCA made capacitors in the documents I have. It seems to me that other specialized components in the ARC-21, such as mechanical filters, were made by RCA. I just checked the manual for the CR-88 and noticed that there are four prefixes (M, MI, P & K) for part numbers. You can get a copy of several RCA manuals at: http://bama.edebris.com/manuals/rca/ Curious, RCA manuals I checked other then for the AR/CR-88 series do not use these part number prefixes. Do these prefixes indicate from whom components were procured? Despite the thirty or forty years I've been monkeying around with antique radios, I had never dug into a twenties-vintage battery set. Marv Beeferman, who has probably forgotten more about that area of collecting than I will ever know, kindly spent the entire day with me and we quickly got a homebrew 1-tube regen set going. That set is now my first and only "really early" working radio. We then spent the rest of the day on a 5-tube Sonora TRF. The exact schematic for that set isn't available, so we spent a lot of time figuring out the circuit and attempting to identify the power connections. This resulted in some "spirited conversations" about how the set might have been designed. Other experts weighed in too, notably Al Klase. I am entirely self-taught in radio theory, and as they say "a self-taught man has a fool for a teacher." So it's nice when a real engineer can either validate or shoot down your theory. We didn't get it going by the end of the day, but I learned a few things and as always, it's a lot more fun doing detective work on this stuff with knowledgeable friends than in the solitude of your own workshop. -- Dave Sica Dave Sica New Jersey Antique Radio Club On Thu, Nov 6, 2014 at 9:19 PM, RICHARD LEE wrote: > Just remember > Reply = Poster > Reply All = Everyone > > _________________________________________________________ > Greetings Fellow Enthusiasts, Just a reminder that our repair clinic is > this Saturday...at InFo Age...let me know if you need an appointment for > your "sick" radio. One could imagine that RCA made its own caps to meet quality standards in a new, mass-produced component and eventually sold off or closed that part of Harrison because it could invest in more profitable parts or systems. As for parts prefixes, the only one I recognize is MI, which was RCA's and which ran up into the millions by the 1980s. Alex ~~~ Alexander B. Perhaps the best opportunity to learn by doing is by attending the club's Repair Clinics, where you get to work shoulder-to-shoulder with an experienced mentor on a project of your choosing. That's a great way to get immediate feedback on basic skills like which end of the soldering iron to hold, which end of the filter capacitor should be connected to positive, how not to pull a hot rectifier tube with your fingers and all the other things I hope I will never do incorrectly a second time! And asking specific questions on the the reflector will usually get you an answer from our aggregate knowledge base, which is a pretty impressive one. Finally, I would not want to divert your attention from the Jersey club which is near and dear to my heart and (is in my humble opinion the best radio club in the world!) but realize that like me you're actually closer to the Hudson Valley club and you might want to consider dropping by to the meetings there too. -- Dave Dave Sica New Jersey Antique Radio Club On Fri, Nov 28, 2014 at 6:00 PM, walter jackson wrote: > Just remember > Reply = Poster > Reply All = Everyone > > _________________________________________________________ > > Sorry I guess I should have mentioned I am in the Secaucus area of NJ, but > would be willing to travel a bit to learn. There might be a Sams schematic??? I don't think Pete "Manualman" has it, but you could double check. Joe Devonshire In a message dated 11/29/2014 8:58:57 P.M. I came to HARPS almost two years ago because I was interested in learning more about phonograph restoration and tube amps. Something I knew absolutely zero about. What I found was a group of very helpful guys that are not only incredibly knowledgable in radio restoration and electronics, but also have a great sense of history and appreciation for technology that in many ways is still very relevant even now in our current world of digital 'devices'. It's not only about learning to restore these things from the past, but also learning about things that are still around us in the present. Joining the club has been a very positive experience for me. By the way, my intentions were not to collect radios when I joined...I now have something like 30 of them! Bring it to a club radio clinic, we should be able to help you troubleshoot it there. Don't start swapping out components until you have a schematic or draw one out. Something gets reconnected wrong and you'll have a bigger mess.
