When I worked at the BBC overseas services in London in the late 1960s, 
there was still a library of transcription discs recorded with 
consecutive sides alternating between outside start and inside start. 
This was so that on playback there would not be an abrupt jump in 
quality when changing sides, as outside start (and thus inside end) 
would be followed by inside start, and so on.
