[NJARC] Saturday's repair clinic for an AK 55C

I've partially disassembled my Atwater Kent 55C chassis. Two of the
metal cans have tar in them, one doesn't look like it does, still trying
to remove the top to the 4th one.

The tar seems brittle and breaks apart fairly easily. Will "we" need a
heat gun to get all of the tar out? I can bring one Saturday but if
there's anything I can do now to move things along, let me know.

I've read the metal cans are soldered to a base plate which is screwed
into the chassis. Has anyone removed/worked on these cans before to get
at the capacitors inside?

There are wire wound resistors under the chassis that I do not want to
disturb so removing the cans w/o removing any wires seems to be the best
way to repair the circuit, it's unsoldering the base plates that seems
like it may require effort, any comment?

I picked up a NEC model RM-701B tape recorder. It's a tube model and
kinda runs (needs a new belt) but has no audio. I'll bring it too in
case someone has some input on repairing it. There is a schematic inside
the cabinet. - Louis
