John,
Actually, politics has always affected broadcasting and other media.
East coast network leaders believed that the U.S. should get involved
in Britain's war with Germany in 1940-41, and covered the Battle of
Britain in great detail while also sponsoring broadcast forums where
the isolationists were in short supply. The majority of Americans
disagreed, especially those in the Midwest, to the surprise of those
cosmopolitan New Yorkers who thought they knew what
was best for American foreign policy.
As for the war itself, the establishment media lined up behind the
government, never questioning the firebombing of cities or the
alliances with the communist dictatorship of the Soviet Union or the
corrupt Nationalists of China. Maybe those were the best decisions,
but in a democracy or even a republic they deserve a discussion.
