Lots of chatter on the 'net about WD-40 getting sticky over the years.  Sticky will attract dust and dirt and you will be right back with the original problem.  The up side is that the sticky WD-40 residue is removed by fresh WD-40!  So just keep track of how often you need to spray the same control to quite it.

For the skinny on what is in WD-40, see:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wd40
and
http://www.wired.com/science/discoveries/magazine/17-05/st_whatsinside
The bottom line is that WD-40 is mostly Mineral Oil and Stoddart fluid along with other alkanes (hydrocarbons).  You do know that Stoddart fluid was developed for dry cleaning clothes?

WD-40 is great for what it was designed for, water displacement and it is also a good solvent.  For example, I use it and Krud-Kutter to clean the gear train of R-390A receivers.  Krud-Kutter, unlike Formula 409 and others, doesn't attack aluminum or brass.  After 50+ years, these radios are all over lubed and are a sticky mess.  Just go back and forth with WD-40 and Krud-Kutter with water and a small brush on a stick to loosen the crud, grit and grime.  The last step is to use Krud-Kutter, rinse well with water and then spray with alcohol to remove the water.  Then use your favorite synthetic lube sparingly to get all of the bearings and pivot points moving easily.

I do not lube gears, especially brass gears.  It just attracts dust and grit and will ruin the mechanism over time.  This is what watchmakers say and they should know how to work with gears.  For a lube I like Tufoil, it seems to work well but others like Mobile 1.  A bottle of either will last a very long time.

STEVE:

THANKS FOR CHECKING WITH THE MANUFACTURER.AS EXPECTED THEY HAVE OTHER CLEANERS,BUT THAT STILL DOES NOT MEAN THE REGULAR WD040 CANNOT BE USED FOR ELECTRICAL CONTACTS.

WITH THE ADVENT OF SO MANY TELEVISIONS,MANUFACTURERS WERE PRAISIBG THEIR CONTACT CLEANER AS BEST.

IN THE 30'S UNTIL IT WAS BANNED WE ONLY USED CARBON TET(CARBON TETRACHLORIDE AND THAT WORKED GREAT.WE WOULD USE AN EYE DROPPER OR BRUSH.

I AND MANY OF MY FRIENDS WHO USED WD-40 FOR POTS AND SWITCHS NEVER HAD A PROBLEM.
EVERYBODY SWEARS BY WHAT THEY LIKE.

HERE IS SOME INTERESTING READING ON WD-40.
