[NJARC] NRI tube tester - opinions wanted

Steve:

Here's a good article on the restoration of an NRI Model 70. The author assesses it as an excellent all-around tube tester.

One thing to be careful about is the documentation that is provided. For example, some tube testers have roll charts with the more modern tubes and a supplemental book with the older ones. Unless you have both the roll chart and the book, you will be limited in the range of tubes you can test. With some testers, it's the opposite: the roll chart covers the older tubes and supplemental books cover the more modern ones. Again, you need both to enjoy the full range of the tester.

This is just my opinion, but I am very leery of testers that are not in working condition. Repairs to tube sockets or wafer switches can be a huge PITA. A bad power transformer will convert the tester into a door stop or paper weight.

There always seem to be working tube testers available at hamfests and swapmeets so the availability of a non-working tester is not an all-or-nothing proposition. Prices seem to be all over the place.

   Good luck!
