It's interesting that the subject of testing tubes that are not in a tester chart is mentioned as part of a possible tester purchase. This subject was briefly mentioned prior to the last meeting in Princeton. Aaron made a good suggestion: He checks a tube manual for similar tubes that are on the chart and uses these settings to check the unlisted tube. I have an emissions tester and noted that the tubes are tested by each section. A triode, for example, could be tested by testing each section individually. It helps to have a known good tube to get some of the power settings, but the pin connections are pretty straightforward. A tube manual is also helpful.
Maybe this will stir some other suggestions and helpful hints.

Given uncertainty, can an electrolytic capacitor be used in place of a
tubular?...esp. when one end is grounded.

Steve,
Your best bet is to find a working tube tester only because a non working tube
tester can have a bad power transformer of a bad meter, both of which is almost
a kiss of death unless you find a identical model parts unit to salvage the
parts needed.
You don't need a Hickok tube tester for radio tubes, a good emissions tester
will be fine for your needs. If you have the extra cash, then by all means
purchase a Hickok, you can't go wrong.

I believe the Hickok is the best...correct.
What other brands should I consider for restoration work?
Should I consider getting a none-working tester ( less costly ) to bring
back to life??
Tnx,
Steve T.

Thinking 'bout it some more...would also want to check my Ham xmtr
tubes...like 6146, 807 etc...that may limit my choices.
So...the question is: how would I know if the tester can do these?...if I
can't find the manual online or if the seller has no manual???
