[NJARC] How is everyone????

We are at my in-laws in Queens. We left Atlantic Highlands Wed night since it
was getting cold at night. There is still no power (lost it Monday afternoon).
We have a 2 year old so we didn't want to stay without heat. Atlantic
Highlands is high (about 150 feet ASL) so we were never in danger of flooding.

The town marina was destroyed, large boats were everywhere they shouldn't be.
Highlands and Sea Bright are next door and were destroyed, you aren't allowed
back in those areas. Union beach, just north of us, lost about a 100 homes and
Keansburg lost a bunch also and the amusement park. Those without power and no
where to go also have no communication unless their cell phone service came
back. My wife's phone (Verizon's cell) worked the whole time. Mine, (ATT)
didn't work at all for days. We have fios, and the land line quit after 8 hours
(battery backup). Last year we lost power for a week, but had a regular Verizon
line and the land line was operating throughout. I am going back to that after
things are back to normal.

We want to get back home asap when the power is back. They are saying it may be
Wednesday. That would be 10 days if we are lucky.
Thanks,

Steve Boracchia

Here in South Plainfield (Middlesex county) we lost power ~7:15 PM on
Monday. Fortunately we had water. Our hot water heater has a standing pilot
light so we even had hot water (something to consider when buying a new
water heater). My antenna is on pulleys so I lowered based on the predicted
wind - a good thing. One very large tree fell across my property onto my
neighbors yard and over my now down antenna. It is currently unusable but
fixable and undamaged. Our TV antenna, normally pointing at NYC, is now
pointing at the Poconos in PA. Great DXing in the evening using battery
powered radios. None of the usual local power line hash was present. Loaned
a few battery powered radios to friends who had none. They were happy and
it was heartening to know they were put to good use. Power restored after
3+ days.

Spoke with Bob Bennett in Dunellen last night. He still has no power and
is running portions of his home off his generator. He is venturing out for
gasoline today.
